It was very hard to finish watching this movie. The main character--one can't call him a proper protagonist with his cheating, bad-cop ways--was so unsympathetic he was repellant to me. At least the character Dean Winters played in "Hellseeker" was initially sympathetic and therefore engaging. I couldn't wait for Pinhead do hia dirty work on this guy in "Inferno."
I thought Craigs performance was really well. I agree that he was unlikeable, but at the same time I liked how he was constantly trying to justify it. It also played into how he was just trying to do this one thing right and save the child...
It fit perfectly that the main character was no Angel. It's clasic Noir. Personally I really liked Craig Sheffer's performence. I liked the fact the movie had an actual storyline to tell and didn't focus on Pinhead or the Cenobites as much.
A protagonist doesn't have to be a good or likable person necessarily. Plus, Joseph is sympathetic to a degree, much more so than Trevor is once we find out what he did before going to Hell. Joseph at least had good intentions and his "evil" never entered into the realm of murder, while Trevor planned to kill Kirsty to get her inheritance.
I just bought the DVD with I, II, and this one on the DVD. I need to see "Hellsekker" again. It's been awhile. :-) Just watched "Hellworld" the other day. Again not alot of Pinhead or the Cenobites but it wasn't a horrible movie. I liked Lance Henrickson in it.
The reason I loved this movie was the main character. He IS dislikeable but that's exactly what he's supposed to impress the viwer, I think. I hate the while hellraiser franchise but I've seen this movie 4 times over the years and each and every time I just find myself completely absorbed into the hellish world about 20 minutes into the movie. I personally dislike the actor, I just don't like the way he looks, talks, walks or acts, so in general I'd just walk away when I see his picture on the cover of a DVD but to give credit where credit is due: he out did himself and many many many lead horror actors.
Ugh. I hate him. Just weird and a bad actor. This was the worst Hellraiser (straight-to-video) in my opinion. I gave this one a "two," and he helped me in this decision to give it such as low IMDb rating.
Totally agree I wanted hellraiser to get him. It's hard to watch a film with a horrible main character because you can't be afraid if the bad guy if your on his side. Blah..
But the character was SUPPOSED to be unlikable and unpleasant. Granted, it didn't help that the actor looks and acts like he just stepped off the set of a bad Cinemax softcore tit-flick...
Anyone here mentions Hotel California dies before the first line clears his lips.
I enjoy the realistic portrayal of a typical hard nosed, bent cop, who was pretty selfish in his attitude. The whole clasic Noir style of it, really sealed the deal for me. I'd really like to know of more movies like this one.
Well, you're not really meant to like him. I thought Joseph was okay (minus the actor, who was passable at times and awful at others), and, in theory, I think having an initially unsympathetic protagonist could've been a good idea too. The main issue is the execution (they definitely needed to layer Joseph more and give him more sympathetic qualities)
