Statham & Grier as the leads over Ice Cube & Henstridge.

In hindsight it's so obvious this should have been the case.

This was Statham first American commercial production. He was an unknown. Sandy King struggled to understand Statham accent. Both Screen Gems & Sony wanted to nix him. Carpenter having seen "The Euro" productions Snatch & Lock lobbied for him. "He ,Statham , was popular overseas" proclaimed Carpenter. Ice Cube had just come off Three Kings and secured the lead. Statham was recast in a smaller and not the hero.

AT THE TIME HENSTRIDGE AND CUBE WERE THE RIGHT CHOICES BASED ON CURRENT STAR LEVEL.
