Proof that Carpenter can no longer direct
Compare The Thing to this. One's a genre-defining masterpiece, the other is a derivative sci-fi B-movie with the feel of a sci-fi channel series. Sure, this film is a popcorn-flick (hey, I enjoyed it) but sincerely you can't deny one film is head and shoulders beyond the other in pretty much every respect.
I mean with lines like this: 'Yeah, and while you're at it why don't you go and grab me a beer killer?!' Carpenter must have known he walking into gray by putting his skills behind this film. And the end result raises the same point: not great, not rotten but neutral uninspired film-making.
You don't spin a menorah.
