I hope Ice Cube was TRYING to be funny........

Was it me, or did Ice Cube seem almost desperate to convince the audience that he is truly "Straight Outta Compton"? We get it Ice Cube, you're a gangsta who made it big and even though you're in Hollywood, you would cap my ass at the drop of a hat 'cause that's how you roll in the Hood.

Early on in the film, listening to him spit a few tired, cliches at the camera, I thought he was TRYING to be funny and over the top. It was only after a bit did I realize that this was his version of acting.

Cube is NOT gangster - He just plays at being one. I think he might have even gone to college, not very "Hood" or "street" or "gangster" is it? Anyhow, he's not a gangbanger, at all or ever was I am sure of that.

By the way, could you just take a few moments to read my signature . . . Thanks.

Being a gangbanger isn't the same thing as "being gangsta". Gangsta in the hip-hop culture sense is a "state of mind" or whatever - a machisimo of sorts. If you think about it, it's not really that much different than how, say, Italian-American mafiosos are stereotyped as behaving.

Growing up in Compton would probably mean developing that sort of machisimo is almost required just to fit in - if you don't, you'd probably become a target. (Speculation of course, I'm no sociologist/psychologist.) Given the dangerous nature of Compton, I wouldn't be surprised if Cube's youth included violence.

While he may have went to a trade school, I'm not sure that he finished before his music took off. Either way I don't see how that really affects his "cred" or whatever.

I know what you mean, but I think Ice Cube made it work here

I liked him in this. I remember his flashback of when he arrived in the town and he had a shotgun and was ready to jump out and rob everyone. He had a devilish look on his face that just looked like he was having fun in the role and so was I watching him in this space western horror thing... Then he jumps out and no ones there and the story goes on....

EDIT: OOOOOPS. I mean he jumps out and theres a bunch of headless hanging bodies there and the story goes on. Sorry.
