Actually, it was shot in a gypsum mine in New Mexico. All the gypsum in the area was dyed with a huge amount of biodegradable food dye to make it look like it was on Mars.

Well I think Total Recall did a better job of creating the look and feel of Mars, and that was a decade before!

He's a master of nothing if he alienates his audience like that! You can not suggest that this is a well made movie that gets its point across well!

I like Carpenters other films, in fact pretty much every other of his his films, but this was like he just gave up!

I taken more enjoyable turds!

To me GOM is by faaaar his greatest film! Sci-fi masterpiece with imagination very few other films of the genre can come close to.

Fair play Patton! Totally respect your opinion. I will say this for it: it does have a vey cult feel to it. I guess that's why it causes polar opinions.

About to go shoot a sci fi film myself...maybe that'll become a cult classic too :)

I liked this better than

Mouth of Madness
Village of the Damned

Not his greatest but a fun movie to watch and with a few changes could easily have been one of his greatest.

Havent seen each JC film but I have seen alot.

Even at that, it's among my, oh, probably top five personal favorite Carpenter films. Nothing's going to surpass EFNY and The Thing in my affections, but I really enjoy GOM despite a handful of weaknesses (mostly in the acting).
