Atmosphere?

I only saw the last half hour of this on tv the other night, but one small point kept nagging at me that noone else seems to have noticed. Apart from the rubbish sets and worse acting, where were the space suits? Or have they created an artificial atmosphere? I know its fiction, but they could at least get one very basic fact right! Or use an entirely fictitious planet!

As you'd have known if you'd watched the beginning of the film, humans have been in the process of terraforming Mars for years and its atmosphere has been gradually becoming more breatheable.

They had these small apparatuses called breathers. Before they get off the train the woman who is first in command tells the rookies to use their breathers because there wont be oxygen outside the train. Which brings me to a major plot hole. When the group are initially heading towards the train and banded together the ghosts/crazies/zombies destroy a building and it can be seen burning in the distance. Isn't oxygen required for fire?

reply

There's oxygen in the atmosphere, just not as much as there will be when the terraforming is complete. When they're putting on the breathers, a couple of them recall that it hasn't been too many years since they had to wear full face masks.

Of course it's also possible for fires to be fed with oxygen from other sources -- oxidizing agents like potassium permanganate, for example. But I don't think that's what's happening here.

Either way, no "plot hole."

Fire can happen at oxygen concentrations below that which humans can remain conscious. Presumably the breathers were meant to be supplemental oxygen like that which some mountain climbers carry with them, however they apparently got forgotten about after that early scene.

reply

I think there is enough oxygen,
but it remains too much carbon dioxyde from martian natural atmosphere and maybe some more added to increase temperature.
Removing CO2 is the last step of the terraforming process.

So I guess "breathers" are small CO2 filters to prevent headaches rather than oxygen supply

You watch 30% of the film and scream PLOT HOLE ?!?

So...
- you watched the last 30 min of 'Superman' and said "No one can fly or bend steel!"
- you watched the last 30 min of 'Star Wars' and said "who was that ghost telling the kid what to do - that's a cheat!"
- you watched the last 30 min of 'Raiders of the Lost Ark' and said "an old foot locker doesn't have magic powers!"
- you watched the last 30 min of 'Alien' and said "why didn't they go grab a shotgun?"

reply

I must admit although I pretty much watched it from the beginning it didn't seem to explain why Mars was completely inhabitable for the humans. Not just the breathable atmosphere completely free of poisonous gases, but also the perfect level of Gravitation and temperature sufficient for people to walk outside in normal clothes without freezing to death in -200 degree temperature.

reply

There were some small titles at the beginning that talked about the terraforming being 84 percent complete, etc.
