...than Tim Burton's buddy, Johnny Depp. Depp came off more like a nervous pervert then a quirky genius. Cumming brought Wonka to mind all through this movie and would have been a natural to play him.

Yeah, hadn't thought about it before, but I gotta agree about Cumming. Depp is one of today's most adept characterizers (especially in a Burton vehicle), but his Wonka was weak.
shareI am a Depp fan,but I do believe Alan would have been perfect as Willy Wonka , he certainly has the acting and looks but of course Depp will always be Burton's number one choice for any role .

Johnny Depp was how it was done in the book. Cumming I still think would've kicked ass though. But no, Depp was great. He's more Dahl's vision than Wilder.
