Brando was barely in the film
I was pretty disappointed, but I understood. Was it because he was sick, weak, or was it just because he was egotistical. I read he didn't even want to smile? Any thoughts on this..?

shareBrando's part wasn't big to begin with. I liked his monologue at the end though.
I understand he didn't like the director, Frank Oz, very well. Called him
Miss Piggy on the set. (Frank was a Muppeteer before) Marlon certainly had his moments later in life. There was the Larry King interview where he kissed him right on the lips.
Nevertheless,Marlon Brando was a great scene stealer.

because Brando got paid HUGE money for the short days on set.
not sure how much he was paid, but I bet a couple million easy.
3 million
"Im just a bum sitting in a motor home on a film set, BRANDO said, and they come looking for ZEUS".

Brando did nothing good after 1980. Even before then he was massively inconsistent, albeit with more than a few truly great performances.
shareLater in his career, Brando was largely in it for the money.

Brando was a mess and didn't seem particularly well in this film.
Some trivia for all of you - when he finally won the role in The Godfather, nobody trusted him so they offered him $100,000 or a percent of the gross. He was so desperate he took the $100,000.
He was always lazy, always brilliant, and the horrible heartbreak he suffered I'm sure just finished him off.
Brando's health was not good the last 4 years of his life. He had respiratory problems in 2000 and in April 2001 he had a bad case of pneumonia.
They said his memory also failed him greatly. In an HBO show about the movie Ed Norton said Brando had issues remembering the lines so they hooked up an earpiece and fed him the lines.
Brando hated director Frank Oz. Brando was the king of high maintenance and instead of coddling him, Oz was confrontive. Oz later said it was a huge mistake because Brando refused to deal with him anymore and DeNiro was asked by Brando to direct his scenes which he did. Oz communicated with DeNiro from a different location during those scenes. He regretted not being more tolerant and supportive.
The part wasnt' a big one and with his weight, personal pressures and health issues, asking Brando to do a major roll would have been pretty much impossible. This was in fact Brando's last major picture and role before his death in 2004
Which made it better
