The ethnicities

the part was not for a white person both her parents were played by latina actors, duhhhh!!!!!One was Puertorican and the other was brazillian.Oh and if anyone cares to do their research Italy (bases for all italians) was a spanish colony the languages are even similar.and even if this was an italian role, guess what there even darker than Puertoricans, well those of them who arent, mixed. And no one asked why the cast Sisto as the brother when he was the only italian actor cast for the family members i tell ya if you spanish or black someone alway has a opinion about how white you look.

So sick of lables.I think that people only who are white can say what the true charactoristics of a white person is but really once you give people that option i have herd people make rediculas comments about how a person they happen to already know the race of could never pass for white because they clearly look "latina" or mixed or some dumb "one drop rule" comes in to play which makes them say they have african features in them because there great grandmother once removed is black.

J-lo would appear white to the casual on looker if the did not know her name and race. her skin is not an olive tone it is very pale as seen in selena which is a traditional puertorican trait which is why mexicans did not want her to play selena's part who had olive skin.If you have seen the ads where Jennifer appears bronzed it has been airbrushed she's whering a tanned and so forth. And i also think that even if the part were intended for a white actress she has been breaking the hollywood mold and having them pick actresses for parts based on there skills and not there race is huge.

i look foward to a day when i can view a movie where none of the actors are the same color and the movie is NOT about race. Maybe even a couple of them might even play family members, lol.

THIS COMMENT IS A REPLY TO A POSTING ABOUT THE MOVIES RACE I DID NOT JUST JUMP TO CONCLUSIONS ALL OF THE ABOVE IS MY OPINION BASED ON WHAT OTHER PEOPLE POSTED ON THIS SITE ABOUT THE MOVIES CAST.

so all you guys get a life and stop judging.

oh and if you are wondering what color i am i'll do you a favor and say for today i'm clear.

Seems to me that you really do not have to look at race or ethnicities in
the movies and just go with the story. I really do not pay attention to
who is what as far as race unless it is the story. In Angel Eyes it is not
the story. Not sure why you think it important

italy a colony of spain?... right.. and in 14 century spain and portugal divided the world in two. lol get a life and stop payingso atention to colors.. see beyond that...

reply

Many countries and regions were colonies or possessions of Spain. Take a look at this map. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Spanish_Empire.png
And Spain and Portugal did divide the world between them in the 15th century, which allowed them to dominate the oceans until the 17th century and establish worldwide empires.

jlo white to the casual viewer? which viewer is that? the one with his eyes closed?

reply

OK - so Italy (or portions of it) were part of the Spanish Empire in the 1700's. If your point was that the languages are similar, that is because they are both "Romance" languages. These languages derived from Latin, which proliferated during the period 1700+ years earlier when the Roman Empire (you might think of it as the Italian Empire) engulfed much of Europe, including Spain.

What has all of that got to do with this movie? Nada.

reply

No sir/madam. My point was not about the similarity of the languages, etc. It was only to set you straight about Spain's role in Italian history. Good day.

Umm J-Lo white to the average person....are you serious. Maybe to the average blind person. But anyway its a movie just get past the race. Its a cliche just like the african americans always get killed first and the caucasian girls always trippping and falling and getting killed hahahha.

I myself would not use the term "colony," but I can tell you off the top of my head that Spain's presence in Italy was not for a "short period of time." For example, Sicily and Sardinia were ruled from Spain from 1282 to 1700, and the southern third of the mainland since the mid 1400s also until 1700. So perhaps YOU should do some research.
And btw, you say "and anyway mediterranian people are all very similar, for example I'm portuguese and when I travel, ppl always think I'm either portuguese, spanish or italian, you can't really tell, if you don't hear them talk and determinate the language."
Precisely the point many of us are trying to make. JLo can play many European nationalities.

Oh yeah, and did I mention that Spain also ruled Milan up in Lombardy? And Parma, too?

Sorry to rain on your parade yet a little more here, Movieluv, but Italians com in all colors and flavors, much like other races. Northern Italians can be light-skinned, blonde and blue-eyed, while Sicilians can come in much darker tones, and all combinations in between. For example, my brother and sister have olive skin and dark eyes, while I have very fair skin and more hazel eyes - and we're all from the same set of parents. Don't even attempt to put all Italians into one box. We're far more varied than that, and we're not all in the mafia, lmao. Fugeddaboutit . . .

ok all the stuff i mentioned up there was due to some really arrogant and petty supposite fans of the movie making several post complaining about the casting saying that J lo thought she was white and could play a white woman. And that she was the only actor in the film who was playing a white italian.Which clearly they were misinformed. I made a comment about her being able to come a cross as a white woman because she was clearly lacking her ethinic discription in this movie with the dyed hair and all i did not mean that she looks white period.the comments that were made were stating that this big ole puertorican stuck out like a sore thumb in the cast which clearly was not true in fact i found it quite ironic that only two major characters were real italians lol. and so i voiced my opinion on the subject.i think that people who read the above comment and also wrote about this exact thing in a fellow postinig know who they are and understand this postbecause it contains responses on all the stupid comments they made about race.

and everyones telling me to look past race that is clearly what i was telling everyone i don't seem to care for race i get mad at statments that are really stupid being made about race

1) JLo is Latina/Hispanic (both and they are NOT identical). Both Latinos and Hispanics can be ANY RACE including white. They are also ALL different skin tones- people think that Latinos are all dark- this is not even true.

2) the reason people didn't want Jlo to play Selena wasn't because of her skin tone, it was because she's NOT MEXICAN. They wanted a mexican actress to portray Selina, end of story. Not someone who 'looked Mexican.' A. Mexican.

There is no such thing as white OR Latino- the two are not mutually exclusive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
