That's it! i asked the same question two days ago, in german, but noone replied. Now that you mention Moulin rouge, I realized where I heard it before. You are right, it is one the Moulin Rouge soundtrack. It's called "Nature boy" and is performed by David Bowie. It was written by Edwin Ahbez. The lyrics begin: There was a boy, a very strange enchanted one, they say he wandered very far, very far over land and sea...
Nat King Cole sang it originally.
shareActually. Nat King Cole sang the second rendition, and the most famous one. The original song was composed and sung by Eden Ahbez in 1947. There have been many (and I mean many) renditions of this song by many singers. I happen to have Celine Dion's rendition on one of her CDs. There is an entire article on the song in Wikipedia. It's a very moving and even haunting tune.

Bless you, you angel! I've been searching everwhere for the song!
"Read my furry lips...no"
- Snowbell from Stuart Little
I met the (unfortunately) late Eden Ahbez years ago. He spent some of his early years living in a canyon in the Sunland foothills with his Native American wife and son. He was a very small, slight guy with a ginger-colored beard and I would always see him doing errands in his old white van. He once played "Nature Boy" for my sister and I on a bamboo flute and told us how he came up with the song and tried to get it to Nat King Cole. Once he dropped by our house and I played the George Benson version of the song for him.
