Denzel Washington said no..

...so they change the character to a white guy?? I'm pretty sure there are other black actors out there who could have done it.

What? What does that have to do with anything? I honestly doubt they originally chose Denzel just because he was black... You see for many non-racists it doesn't matter what your skin color is.

What do you mean what? Of course it's to do with anything. The point is that the character in the novel is black, so yes I do think that's relevant to their choice of original actor. But as soon as Denzel says no, they cast a white actor instead of choosing from the talented pool of black actors for someone who fits the original character. That's what's racist.

No it isn't. Now I haven't read the book, but in the movie there is nothing to do with race at all. They could have chosen a man of any race and the story would have played out the same. Not all roles are written with a specific race in mind. And even ones that are can often be changed quite easily as the skin colour of the character does not affect the story. Race in a film like this should matter as much as hair or eye colour...not at all!

Well, the part where the hooker mom started hooking up with Kevin Spacey and he showed off his burn marks was pretty gross...not sure if the black skin of a black actor could do that effect /sarcasm.

I'm sure a lot of people here saw the movie "Shawshank Redemption" before. Morgan Freeman's character (Red) was white in the book. The book Red was a red headed Irish-American. The movie Red was a black man. I'm sure that there were plenty of white actors needing work too, just as assumed by the OP of this thread about the casting of Kevin Spacey (a WHITE man) in a role that was a black man in the book. Nobody cried foul about the Shawshank Redemption casting debacle. Just saying....

Why should they have to hire people because they're black? If you went to a job interview and they said "sorry, we don't hire white/black people", would you think it's fair? They changed it because Kevin Spacey is a great actor, not because he's white, fool.

I agree although I do find it strange that they didn't cast another black actor. However, that being said how do we know they didn't and then for whatever reason they auditioned Kevin Spacey, loved his performance and thought he was the best man for the job? If the ethnicity of the individual isn't pertinent to the part they're playing then should it really matter? So many other characters from literature or comic books have gone from being white to being being black in movies and television. Besides Morgan Freeman in The Shawshank Redemption there have been numerous examples:
