His prime objective was to get her money, which he desperately needed; but she was attractive and so he pursued her as a secondary objective. He didn't necessarily give up on the second -- he had the time and would wait for the opportunity -- but his focus was getting the money. It seems like the events take place over the course of just a couple months.
