Why was everyone taking pills throughout the movie?

I think this was a commentary how pretty much all problems are now being "solved" by "taking a pill". this does not mean literal meaning all the time, but sometimes it does. Just the fact alone that there are billions profit made in "curing teenagers from being attracted to attractive things" is proof enough.

I think its safe to say that everyone who took a pill was in his head.
Which leaves the boyfriend as the only real character.

Exactly. Just as Ed takes pills from the onset, it is intended as a continuity device to reiterate the fact that it is all part of his dream/paranoia.
