I think it all started when she told him she knew Donnie didn't kill Jessica. Remember when he surprised her at her home and told her that he couldn't stop thinking about what she said? He was scared; thought he was in the clear when Donnie was convicted. He needed to 'push' her to see if she had the gift and could find out what happened, which is why he wanted her to perform a reading, and when that didn't work, suggested going to the pond that night--i.e. why wait when she may have a vision when he's not around and tell someone? I, too, think he felt he'd have her sympathy, especially since they both knew Jessica was sleeping with Donnie (and the lawyer, whom he didn't know ... and however many else of the town's men!). Yeah, the moment she pulled back when he reached out to her, I think it kinda clicked with him that he needed to do something to stop her. I was overjoyed when Buddy showed up but was seriously MIFFED when it was revealed he killed himself. That took the movie in a direction it did not need to go--i.e. apparitions. Are they (writers) saying Buddy's love for her was soooooooo strong, he stepped in to protect her? Umm, how come it wasn't her husband????? It would have been better if Buddy had not died or had her husband show up in her moment of need in my opinion.
