why...? (SPOILERS)

SPOILERS!!!

Why on earth did Greg Kinear's character (forgot his name) WANT Cate Blanchett to know it was him? didn't he totally lead her on and brought her to the scene of the crime at the very end? I don't understand why he wanted her to know. I mean, you'd think a murderer would NOT call in the psychic and make damn sure she solved the puzzle....

reply

Yeah I'm wondering that too.

I also wanna know why she didn't sense something "off" about him and why she liked the guy. ???

reply

Maybe because he thought it wasn't all his fault, he wanted Cate's character to 'see' how awful Holmes character was to Kinnear's character, kinda justifying the murder? At least that was my take.

reply

I agree. So taht she would know he wasn't a bad guy, just in a bad situation... though I don't know how he thought that it would work.

reply

your on the right track with him wanting her to know his side of things because he liked her,but it's not that he wanted her to know so much as it was he was testing her to make sure that she did know (or didnt for that matter)so he could either kill her or convert her so to speak hence the queit area he brought her to,you could also see himm totally sizing her up once she figured it out

Shouldn't there be a comma after the introductory word, "Sorry"?

I got the feeling he thought she'd pity him. He wanted her to understand. I don't think he originally intended to kill Annie. I think he hit her because she said she wouldn't tell (I don't think it occured to him till then that she might) and because she backed away when he tried to touch her. Also he confessed pretty quickly so I don't think he was very ruthless or calculating.

reply

i think he just wanted to try whether Annie was able to find out at all, and if she was, he made sure to be present at that time to "solve" it somehow = kill her right away

reply

also if she does find out what happened, he wants to be there when she does so she doesnt go to the police straight away

reply

Yeah, that's what I think too. He just wanted to see if she would find out it was him. And he needed to be there when she found out so he could take care of things. Or maybe convince her not to tell. He did try to tell her he was a good person and I do think he really liked her.

"Wang Chung or I'll kick your ass!"

reply

He felt guilty and wanted to go to jail, to get his punishment. It wasn't in his character to be a murderer. He couldn't live with himself. Though he did like Annie (Cate Blanchett) so maybe he thought by showing her the situation and if she understood and forgave him it would be enough.

reply

I don't understand why people watch movies like that and disagree to a 'logic' with an argument from outside 'real world'.You have to be very sincere with the movie. You have to see that in the movie she told she cannot see all the time all the happennings around her(which I found realistic). So how could anyone expect her to see the devil side of Greg's character. She was as everyone biased, she didn't see things in a wrong way, but she someshow neglects or ignore.
Peace..

when Annie went to visit him and he was in a bad state with beer bottles everywhere I believe that was genuine remorse and not acting the part of the grieving boyfriend.

reply

What I want to know is.. how did Buddy arrive just in time? How did he even know she was there? I thought Blanchett was hallucinating when she saw him at her house

reply

he all but said, i wanted you to see because then you'd know i didn't do this on purpose, i wasn't to blame for starting it (sic)

Buddy was there at exactly the right time because it was his spirit there with her. He had killed himself earlier that evening.

reply

I think it all started when she told him she knew Donnie didn't kill Jessica. Remember when he surprised her at her home and told her that he couldn't stop thinking about what she said? He was scared; thought he was in the clear when Donnie was convicted. He needed to 'push' her to see if she had the gift and could find out what happened, which is why he wanted her to perform a reading, and when that didn't work, suggested going to the pond that night--i.e. why wait when she may have a vision when he's not around and tell someone? I, too, think he felt he'd have her sympathy, especially since they both knew Jessica was sleeping with Donnie (and the lawyer, whom he didn't know ... and however many else of the town's men!). Yeah, the moment she pulled back when he reached out to her, I think it kinda clicked with him that he needed to do something to stop her. I was overjoyed when Buddy showed up but was seriously MIFFED when it was revealed he killed himself. That took the movie in a direction it did not need to go--i.e. apparitions. Are they (writers) saying Buddy's love for her was soooooooo strong, he stepped in to protect her? Umm, how come it wasn't her husband????? It would have been better if Buddy had not died or had her husband show up in her moment of need in my opinion.

reply

I believe he wanted her to know about what he did because he was beginning to fear that her psychic abilities would lead her to the truth anyway. By his reasoning, it would be better if she discovered the ultimate truth when they were alone together in a secluded place so he could eliminate her.

Annie was hallucinating when she saw Buddy at her house. Buddy didn't arrive at the docks just in time, he was never there, he had already killed himself by the time Annie discovers who the real killer is. Buddy arriving and saving the day was just Annie's imagination. According to the officer the following morning who informs Annie that Buddy being there was impossible, Wayne doesn't remeber how it (her rescue) happened. The question of who saved her or even what really happened that night is never answered.

It was Buddy, in spirit form. she did not imagine him. he was around to keep an eye on Annie. once he saw she was safe, he went on his way to the light....

Annie and Buddy had a very strong connection in life and in death. He gave her back the baby's washcloth, that was proof enough to her that it was Buddy who saved her.

He believed she would eventually get it, and wanted to kill her before she did, and turned him in. Since no one in the town (except Buddy) seemed to like her, who would care?

I'm sorry, Masque, I wasn't specifically replying to your post, just putting one on at the end. I thought that's how to do it. And I think we're saying rather the same thing.

It seemed quite obvious to me that he believed if she saw, she would understand why he did it, and that secret would no longer stand in the way of him and Annie being together. He liked Annie, after all. He even said, "If it had been you with me instead of her, then none of this would've happened." He wants and expects her to see his point of view, understand, and say, "you're right, you and I would be much better together." That's why he seems confused and unhappy when she says she won't tell anyone, as if she's afraid/a victim, rather than understanding/a partner.

Basically he's just kind of messed up, all in all. I thought it worked rather well.

Why didn't she just keep quiet right then when she "saw" he was the murderer, or make something up--they were in a remote spot in the middle of the night--that was foolish--there were a lot of foolish things about this movie that everyone here seems to think is so wonderful.
