Kate was very bossy

I noticed this right away. She's always telling him what to do. He walks the dog, he takes care of the kids, he has to run everything by her. They even have to have sex when she says. I was completely on his side when they were in the department store and he wanted the suit. It wasn't so much the suit, but I agreed with his speech and how he said, "What's in it for me?" And she did kind of talk to him like he was a kid. Like when a mother tells their kid they can't have something.

They focused on him. Presumably they were sharing duties. When in the shower she says "you know it's your day", implying that they share all those parental duties you spoke of.
There is no point in showing her doing normal mom stuff. The protagonist is who we are following.

She doesn't necessarily decide when they have sex, she just makes him tell her he loves her. Not too much to ask. And a father yelling "what's in it for me" in the middle of a busy department store is never going to get a lot of sympathy from his wife. She was just being practical, since he was apparently out of his mind.

Him saying "What's in it for me?" was a slap in the face to their marriage, his children. What was in it for him in that alternate reality was being a dad, he liked playing with the kids, walking the dog and coming home to his beautiful wife. It may not be your idea of a great life but he loved his life because he was surrounded by people he loved and who loved him.

To have only found a wife as attractive and smart as her. Loved her husband and children, her home, etc.
