Is it just me or....

Did anyone else think that Oliver Platt doesn't make a very believable wrestler, especially one thats supposed to be really good. Its been awhile since I saw the whole movie (just started watching the last half on T.V. right now) but I remembered the first time I saw this that just didn't sit right with me.

I don't think he's supposed to necessarily be "good" just popular. I've seen wrestlers who were given a push and/or were popular with the fans who looked about as believable as Oliver Platt. I still like to believe that Jimmy King is a direct dis to Jerry Lawler, even though it probably wasn't. But look at the popularity of Dusty Rhodes, at least in the past. Jimmy King was popular with the fans but was blowing spots, showing up late, etc., and not a good "worker" who had a poor reputation with "the boys."

reply

Well, isn't it pretty obvious? Jimmy King, Jerry the King..??? But not all wrestlers have to be bleeding bodybuilders, does anyone remember Cactus Jack aka Mankind aka Mick Foley??? Does anyone remember Adrian Adonis? Or, as already mentioned, Dusty Rhodes? It's not what or how much you eat, baby, it's what you do in the ring!! IMHO.

The guy probably knows more wrestling moves than Hulk Hogan - who, aside from Andre the Giant, is the most recognizable name in the business. You don't have to be skilled to be a top wrestler.

ever hear of Hulk Hogan? The most famous wrestler of all time really isnt a very good wrestler. Granted, he was on the juice, which made him look tough and intimidating....somewhat. But yea, watch a Hulk Hogan match...

reply

Wow are you just a new age watcher who has no respect for the classics. Yes the past had some horrible wrestlers... Ultimate Warrior. Hogan paid his dues and did what he had to and he isn't half bad. To answer the original question no he did make a believeable wrestler someone everyone loves but isnt very good. They had to get an actor to play the role I mean honestly would you wanna see Double J or Kanyon play the lead role?

reply

No you wouldn't want to see them, but how about someone like GOLDBERG someone beliveable people love play the lead role. The movie would of probably been more believable if GOLDBERG had the lead role in the movie.

The guy is not made to be an actor in a movie. But in a wreslting movie he can be himself in the ring. He has his own acting ability in the ring as a wrestler and since its a wrestling movie he could probably pull it off.

reply

Well the only reason they got him to play the lead was cuz he is a very good actor. Plus most of the movie takes place outside the ring. But it would've been nice to see a real wrestler play the lead but what can you do.

Oliver Platt did some independent shows when he was in his twenties growing up. That's why they picked him, and even the writer of the movie admitted it was a dis at Jerry the King Lawler. Remember Lawler was teasing leaving WWF a little bit before the movie was made.

When I was a little kid watching pro wrestling in the '70s sometimes I would think to myself "my dad could kick that guy's butt". By the '90s not too many kids were saying that.
