F*** you, I liked that movie

Seeing how this is a Jason Biggs comedy, and seeing how it got 2/5 in my local TV guide, I figured this is going to be another American Pie-type "fart comedy". I only started watching this movie to pass the time till "Reindeer Games", which somehow I always miss, started. However, a loser myself, I soon found myself identifying with lead character Paul Tannek, and sympathized with his hatred towards his roommates, people who Holden Caulfield would without a doubt call phonies. And as any 16-yr-old would, I identified with his affection towards the prettiest kid in the class. So instead of a typical teenage comedy, I got a teenage comedy, but one that contained an important message, and did it without the grossness of AP or Van Wilder. So to all those who ranked this movie low: f*** you, I liked that movie. And "Reindeer Games" can wait.

Yeah I only just saw heard of this film the other night and I really liked it (maybe it is unfortunatly because i could relate to Paul. But anyway, someone above mentioned Holden Caulfield from J D Salingers book Cathcher in the Rye which I've just been studying this year as part of my english course and I found some real resonances. Since reading the book early this year it has becaome one of my all time favourites and I waqs very pleased to see these all to intentional links, the most obviouis being his hunting hat. In the bok, the red hunting hat is a symbol of Holden clinging on to childhood and how he manages to relinquish it at the end by giving it to his sister. The same thing happens in this movie as Dora helps him to move out of his past loser existence into a more meaningful one (even though the new hat is rather silly as well). Also the clothes the other three were wearing I think is meant to show up more how they in fact are the losers who are so desparate and have so little likable personality that they need to drug and rape girls to actually get any.

You haven't heard of it because movies I like are never popular.
But just for your cultural curiosity, teenagers in every college dress like idiots. New York does not have exclusivity when it comes to idiotic adolescent garb, though it is definitely the flagship.

I almost always agree with the ratings that are given on IMDB, even many times when you see the forums filled with "this rating is not correct" as this post is doing. However, I thought Loser was pretty decent. I think it deserves about a 6.5-7.2 rating, instead of what it got.

reply

Just saw it on Tv here.., i thought it was a decent movie..it deserves a higher rating. But i wont say anything bad about the Pies because those are my all time favorites..but this movie is like a 1000 miles away from the APs. As someone else said this should be titled "Teen Romance-Comedy movie" instead of just comedy..

reply

i agree!

it really does deserve a much higher rating!
honestly, 4.10 out of 10? that's pretty unfair.

it was a good movie. :)

reply

Yes! Yes!!!!!! I identified myself too! I loved it!! It really changed my life.

Yeah, I totally agree.
It's a nice movie.
But the thing is all the Pauls out there are the guys you don't see (or choose not to see) and all the jerks are the ones you see whether you want to or not.

reply

I loved this movie!!

Its one of my all time favs and certainly deserves a higher rating than it got.

Mainly because i am just like paul in real life.

Its a cute film that needs to be done a lot more instead of loads of cheap AP rip offs. don't get me wrong most of them are quite good movies and are very funny but they are unrealistic wheras loser is down to earth and real and we can relate to it. thats what makes it so good.

well thats what i think anyways!

reply

yeah this movie is one of my fave films

reply

This movie has value to me because well okay this may sound a little weird to like all you guys but it helped my boyfriend get over a messy break up with one of my closest friends who despite how lovely she is treated him like crap! and like the guy who started this topic I sympathised for Paul and I thought Paul was really cool in my opinion and Dora is gourgeous and has THE MOST AMAZING WARDROBE EVER! and has inspired me to actully make clothes instead of crying for money to get them. Also like the guy said, This film is a comedy but also has a message behind it and can relate to thousands of people.
So this movie shouldnt just be sterotyped crap it should get the respect it deserves.

in response to smother, up there. hell yeah man. Igby Goes Down is such a great movie, and, although Ghost World in my mind isn't in the same class, it's still quite good. American Beauty, even better. How can you like Loser, honestly? It's cliche to the extreme. It's impossible to feel sympathetic to Biggs, who is not only hopeless but is daft as well. And then enter the professor, who can't possibly be a professor of literature (at NYU, no less) and fail to understand Kafka, not to mention the fact that Friedan is still live...

Forget predictable. It's illogical. A girl like Dora and a guy like Paul? Sure, it's all sappy and cute at the end. But what's it a relationship based on? Mutual hatred of his roommates and Alcott? How romantic.

Also, I'd love if Hollywood stopped painting college students as of two varieties: Biggs & Chris/Noah.

the whole point of creating a movie is to present a fantasy, and yeah, i'll admit that Loser was, as you said, hopelessly clicheed and illogical: the story's full of holes, but then again so is virtually any love story ever written in history. Love is supposed to be illogical.. complicated and clicheed even; but in the end, i still ended up enjoying what i saw: it was sweet, it was hopeful, and more than anything it was (god forbid) optimistic! So loosen up a little: movies don't have to be heart-wrenchingly, mind bogglingly, passionately life altering masterpieces to be pleasing, and anyone who narrows his/her viewing experience by thinking that they do obviously needs a good kick upside the head.

I really hate these posts where people act like movie buffs because they can rattle off a few "realistic" indie movie titles to oppose high-budget films. Someone actually had the gall to compare "Can't Hardly Wait" and "Elephant" on another board.

The 'unrealistic' thing gets me every time. No movie is realistic: they're created to let people escape reality. However, I agree that some have better actors with more precise emotion-showing skills. Regardless, I can't see how "Igby Goes Down" or "Ghost World" depict "realistic" situations. In "Igby Goes Down," if I remember correctly, a teenager goes to New York and gets an apartment by himself. In "Ghost World," similar to "Loser," a teenager falls in love with a much older man. I don't really see how these are so drastically different.

It's simple.

People were expecting an American Pie farce type movie purely because of Biggs.

It is a much more laid back comedy - with a proper story as opposed to AP's nob gags.

It certainly isn't in my top 100 films, but it's OK.

It's the same with Kirsten Dunst's Crazy Beautiful - after Bring it On and Get Over It, it is a more, dare I say it 'serious' comedy - if that makes sense.

More of a drama/comedy than an out and out comedy.

I first watched this movie about 5 years old ago yet, I still watch it now and it's just as gd if not better every-time I c it! I am a fan of both Mena Suvari and Jason Biggs, personally I thought they make this movie because they were excellent in their roles 4 it. Basically Loser is a gd teen comedy/drama and I think, both Biggs and Suvari have such chemistry as a couple that they should b in more movies 2gether! I know they're in American Pie but they r hardly no scenes with them both in, where they can really interact is there? Lol.
Well anyway, okay Loser is no oscar-winning movie but if you're into the whole teen genre of movies, then like me; u should love it. Personally I think apart from American Beauty, this is one of Mena's best roles to date; she is so cool as Paul's (Bigg's character) grunger girlfriend and Jason is also perfect as the class loser, who like other ppl on this board have said; we can all relate 2 in some way because basically he just plays such a nice guy.
The only slight fault in this film 4 me was Paul's creepy 'friends' yes, they were funny and also make the film what it is aswell; but they were so mean putting pills in girl's drinks 2 try and make them sleep with them! Luckilly Paul managed to catch them out by changing the tablets in the end and it was quite funny, how when they kicked him out of their room; they tried to act smart 2 make him look like the bad guy. Yet they really were with the spiking of drinks and weren't the ppl all partying and 'operating' on the animals during their party at the animal home.
I was just wondering if all of those cats and dogs were already on tablets already then wouldn't they b really sick after drinking some of the beer or whatever it was lol, on the table at the party? Wierd q I know I just found it strange that when, Paul got back; he didn't really take em 2 the vet or something; just put the animals in their cages again. However he couldn't have really said ' this cat may have drunk spiked beer ', could he????
I know strange q lol, answer it if u wanna. I bet the relpies will b interesting unless every1 who saw it thought the same as me, which would b v. unlikely....
