I've always kinda wondered about this myself. Because, yeah, it makes her feel good, but it shoots him in the foot in terms of getting her away from Alcott and to him.

As others have pointed out, there are about a million inconsistencies in this movie, but I still like it.

Why am I responding to an almost 3 year old post? Anyways, saw this movie when it first came out and then again last night (9 years later) and was surprised how much I enjoyed it this time around. It is a really sweet movie. Anyways, to answer the question posed by the OP, they did this to show how genuinely he cared for Dora. He wanted her to be happy and he knew that her heart belonged to Alcott. He probably felt that if it seemed the flowers were from him that she would have thought it sweet and kind but that's all. It would have been more of a friendship thing.

Loan me fifty dollars.
