This is an Obvious Goof...

That no one has mentioned so far. Professor Alcott goes to prison for having sex with a 17 year old girl in the movie. The movie takes place in the state of New York, where the age of consent is *17*, so obviously you can't be sent to prison for banging a legal aged chick.

reply

Dora is actually 18 (she wouldn't be in college otherwise) and Alcott didn't go to prison, he just got fired for having a relationship with one of his students.

reply

No he went to prison for 5 years...

reply

Where do they say that? And for what charge? As described above Dora is above the age of consent.

At the end when they write next to each character what happens to them in the future. I think it was for sleeping with a 17 year old.

reply

Don't forget about the girl that Paul saw leaving Alcott's office when he goes to talk to him. It may have been her that he got in trouble over.

reply

I think he went to jail for sleeping with another girl, not Mena's character.

reply

Doesn't the whole age of consent thing mean one still has to have permission from the girl's parents? And I think it was obvious they were referring to the blond girl seen leaving Alcott's office since that was the scene replayed during the "American Graffiti"-style ending.

i never seen that bit, i watched it all including the credits and it has no mention as to what happens to them in the future

"sir, sir, i gotta check and see if you've soiled yourself, I'll get to you in a moment, sir!"

Not true...people can have a birthday that lands after the school term starts. One of my best friends was 17 our entire first semester of college because his birthday was in mid-December...

Just throwing that out there...

Mr. White: A few cops.
Mr. Pink: No real people?

It doesn't mean he had the "affair with a 17 year old" in NY state, nor of course does it mean the offense was with Dora.

reply

Actually the most obvious one is where he goes to pick up the pizza, and he already has the video. THEN we see him going to the video store with no video. That is soooo bad.
I came on here to check whether that goof was posted, but seeing as i spotted it, i guess it had to be. I dont do much thinking when watching a movie for the first time.

Um. If she was 18. Why would she need emancipation... But if she wasn't 18 why is she in college.. If. If... If... *System Malfunction*.

Let's just all agree this is a horribly un-well-thought-out planned *beep* movie. But a great one.

Who says you can't be in college if you're 17? I knew a 16 year old in college. There have been younger people in college.

And to those that whine that the age of consent in NY is 17 - so what? It didn't say he was in NY. There are states in the US, where the age of consent is 18 - maybe he was in Arizona, California, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, North Dakota, Oregon, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Wisconsin, or Wyoming at the time. Perhaps he was having an affair with a girl who he took with him to a conference or on vacation, and then got busted one night. It's still a crime even if you don't live there. And as to who the student was, it doesn't say it was a student, just "Professor Alcott is serving 3 to 5 years for having an affair with a seventeen year-old." We already know that he is not a one woman (or girl) guy, who's to say it wasn't someone from outside the uni.

You guys make all these assumptions and then complain that the facts don't match up with your assumptions.

Statutory rape charges can be pressed until a girl is 18 in the state of NY.

reply

Dora specifically stated that she was OVER 18 years old. She says it when they are having an argument near the begining of the movie.
