Any hope for a Saving Francesca Movie?

I think it would be really good,
as long as:
it was filmed in Australia
The actors are really good
The director and screenwriters get along and make the script as good as the book.

Here's who I think so far for casting ideas. It helps if you have read the book.

Emma Lung - Francesca (obviously)
Emily Browning - Siobhan Sullivan
Joel Edgerton - William Trombal (he might have to dye his hair)

Thanks

I was just watching Looking For Alibrandi and then I was actually wondering if they were going to make Saving Francesca into a movie, I loved the book and i think it would be an interesing movie.. Not sure on the cast but it sounds good

reply

Hi ,
No offence but I think Joel Edgerton would be too old to play William
but Emma Lung and Emily Browning would suit there parts

reply

fair point but i think he is supposed to look a lot older - he has the whole "im older so listen to me" look in the book.

Still - any ideas who would be good to play the other roles?

i think alex capelli to be cast as either thomas mackee or jimmy hailler hes got that cheeky/rebel high school kid way about him

not to be racist or mean or anything but francescha is italian and i'm not sure emma lung could pull it off no offense to anyone shes an awesome actress

reply

Yeah he's supposed to be 18, not 30! Even in Year 11, the Year 12s are much older and the ones who have more maturity seem tons older than you, especilly someone who starts off so immature, as Francessa does.

i love this book to i've read and re-read so many times casting would be hard because you've got to have a strong mother figure that when francescha loses that (loses it as in her mother changes not dies) it leaves a huge hole and then a young actress to tackle and act francescha if dona right it could be awesome

reply

Yeah, I think a Saving Francesca movie would b awwwsome! I liked Francesca more than Alibrandi (I could relate to Francesca, my mum was bedridden too, not with depression but with chronic fatigue). I am a huge Melina Marchetta fan (i read ALL her books) and I think that Saving Francesca would be perfect as a film.

I'm not sure about Emma Lung but Emily Browning sounds good.

have you read her new book on -on the jellicoe road- i have it and it really gewd melina marchetta has gone with something a little different because this girl has no family she lives with and she isn't italian i recommend you read it then tell me what you think

reply

On the Jellico Road is a heaps good book as well, they should make that into a movie as well because its got a good story and i like the fact about the flashbacks of the past of the jellico road.

Saving Francesa should be made as well!

Smile Like you mean it

heartbreak high is coming back!! on the new channel abc3 sunday to friday 8:30 pm ;)

on the jellicoe road is the best book ever written! i just fell in love with jonah immediately, and taylor just grows so much more than any of melina's other characters.
i kind of find josie a little bit annoying, she's pretty whingy and selfish, and francesca is kind of going through so much that it's hard to se what she would be like without her mum's and i think her own depression. But she's still pretty strong.
Taylor markham on the other hand... the strongest character in any book i have ever read, and her friends are all the exact friends you'd want to have, not to mention Narnie, Tate, Fitz, Jude and the lovely Webb.
sorry i sound so obsessive. i really love this book.

of course! my rant was just about taylor, but Jonah is definetely the best male hero in Marchetta's books. i mean, Jacob? he just broke up because he couldn't be bothered, and Will was weak the whole of Saving Francesca, couldn't break up with girlfriend, agonising over decisions. Wheras Jonah has dealt with that crap all his life, but still has the ability to see the good, ie Taylor.
I love the intensity. Remember:
'whay does it have to be so intense between you two?'
'because i have an aunt named Narnie and a mother named Tate... do you think i don't want him to be gone more than you do. i do. Because i need to know i can still breathe properly when he's not around. If somethinghappens to him, i need to know that i won't fall apart...' awww, sweet and freakily intense....

hay i definately agree with the post above me and that other girl's (i'm assuming it was a girl they had girl in the ID)

when he goes to her room its like soooooooo romantic and they don't even kiss!!!!! THATS INTENSITY (i think thats how you spell it)

thanks

I still think emma lung is best suited for francesca - even though not italian, she is a brilliant actress and I'm sure she could pull it off.

i guess if she can fake the italina looks
but i've grown up wiht a lot of italians in a small town they have a certain way of doing things (i don't mena this in a bad way) that would be hard to imtate (horrible spelling i know)

I'd love to play Francesca. I can relate to a lot of her experiences. Being half-Portuguese, a lot of people assume that I'm Spanish or Italian. But, as gracie-of-rvale said, it's one thing to fake Italian looks, it's another to fake the culture. It needs to be genuine.

BTW, I just listened to an amazing song by my favourite band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, called Strip My Mind. If "S.F." was ever made into a movie this song would have to be in the soundtrack. It goes perfectly with the themes of the novel. Check it out, you'll see (hear?) what I mean. :)
