This movie was a mess, at least when DDL wasn't on screen, and I don't know if the story can ever be a gripping film. Yes, I don't like gangster films and avoid the genre when DDL isn't there, and sometimes when he is, but does anyone really care about 150-year-old gang warfare and avenging the deaths of professional criminals?
I've just been complaining about similar issues in "The Book of Boba Fett", where a bunch of lowlifes are fighting over territory that none of them deserve to rule. To me, at least, gang warfare isn't a subject that works onscreen (unless is has music by Bernstein and choreography by Robbins), because I never want any of the characters to win the gang wars. I just want them to stop fighting.
