Your question is one for the ages. But it goes like....
-He does have very much screentime.
-He was and is a legend, somewhat disturbed, somewhat pretentious.
-He had dissapeared from film and was a Carpenter...or making shoes in Italy, retired. His five year absence helped ante up the hype.
-He is just not good,he is outerworldly,he owns this film from his first scene.
It does blur the line abit and makes you wonder what would´ve happened if somehow DiCaprio had given a powerhouse performance, since going a while back, two actors of the same gender in a film can not be placed in the Leading category.
Could one say he has one of two leading roles? One could, yet that rule then seems to be very loose and improvised every year. Look at Brokeback,Collateral,Training Day,21 grams,Mystic River and many more where the most famous actor is put in Leading, despite often playing the smaller lead. BAFTA and Globes Comedy department are the only one not playing by these rules basically.
I hope this dumb rule change,as well as the Academy could do what everyone but they do,reward ensembles. But since studios market, sell their actors and categorys how they see fit,I don´t know what can be done.
He should´ve won Supporting,yes.
Which name comes first is rather irrelevant, though, except maybe on a personal level. The basically only time Pacino wasn´t billed first was in TDA where Keanu Reeves is firstbilled....so take that with a bit of salt. As long as you´re billed,is what I Always say...
