Is there an English Professor in da house?

I was hoping that someone with knowledge could explain the text on the flag (roughly 2h12m).
I understand what it says.
What I am curious of is the use of "И's" and periods (which seem almost random).
The text is as follows:

NATIVE. AMERICAИS.
BEWARE OF
FOREIGИ. IИFLUEИCE

SPOILER ALERT!!! Good guy wins/gets girl, a-hole gets kumuppins & I'm out $8 SPOILER ALERT!!!

Okay, so it's probably due to very poor literacy in that time and place. I'm speculating here, but the maker of the flag probably copied the words from another source without actually knowing how to read. There are known instances of backward "N"s resulting from this error, as that letter is particularly easy to mistake for its mirror image.

There's an historical example of such an error here:

I don't know that this is the reason, but it seems like a good bet. I'd be curious to know if anyone knows better.

That flag is actually post-Civil War and shouldn't even had been in the movie, but the backwards "N"s have nothing to do with illeteracy as most people in the northern states were very literate at the time. Its symbolic of the Americans Native Party's origins as a secret society. Much like Freemasonry, they had signs and symbols that only their members could interpret. Unlike the Freemasons however, the party was so short-lived the exact meaning of the backward Ns and odd period placement has been lost to history.
