Able to murder people in the middle of street in 1863?

Were you really just allowed to murder people with no repercussions in 1863? Was it really that lawless? When Bill blatantly murdered Monk in front of 1000 people no one even did anything? What's up with that?

I don't think it happened IRL, but I guess it comes with the territory when you have the police in your pocket, like Bill did. Monk also made the mistake of turning his back on the Butcher. 🐭

If there was anyplace that it might have occurred it would be in Five Points. However, in the little amount of reading that I've done on the subject, GoNY has minimized the filth (many families & their livestock to 1 room)but maximized the violence of the area.

That was the Five Points. Conversely, in the South, slaves were beaten and murdered in public a lot. Heck, in the post-war years they perpetrators were happy to be photographed with the blacks they'd just lynched. If they law is on your side, no worries.

To this day there are many people who don't see the error of a lynching, if the mob is in agreement then the killing must've been justified.

Most of the witnesses to Vallon's death probably wouldnt consider it a murder. None of them trust the cops or the judicial system and don't consider that as an option. If any of them did try to bring a case against Bill, the corrupt cops and politicians would just shut it down and Bill would probably have one of his gangs take them out.

The Five Points area is a tough region to control and the government doesnt have enough power to keep it fully in check. The gangs are the real authority there. If you went out and killed someone else in the points you would probably be worrying about the repercussions from the gangs before you would consider worrying about repercussions from the law.
