such potential

I read for years about Scorsese's plans to make this film and always looked forward to it.
A to see it itor the first time and appreciated the amazing camera work and excellent acting from Day Lewis and De Caprio. However, some of the "star gazing" dialogue falls flat and from the song in the bar early on it starts to go down hill. It just seems to run out of steam and get ponderous in parts, right until the manufactured end.
Whether it was the initial cost of building the set in italy or other budget issues it seemed as though It was a fundamental failure for the director. I'm convinced it wasn't his vision but I guess that's how it goes.

Yes it could've been such an Epic movie it really goes downhill after the Butcher found out about Leo's plans it really made the first half of the movie seem pointless. Of course the second half is just plain disaster full of boring dialogues, uninteresting characters, contrived plots, not to mention an abrupt ending. It could've been so great though as the movie really explored the 19th century New York it really could've been an epic movie like Gone with the Wind but it just fell flat. Even with daniel day-lewis' s stellar acting it's not enough to save the movie...
