Yeah I saw it as similar to the notches on Monk's club. A big element of Christianity is spilled blood for the payment of sins.

Some pseudo "profound" / "deep" BS that means nothing, and results in a rusty/ruined blade.

Yep. That was my take on it as well. If you don't want to ruin your knife, you want to clean blood off it, or it will rust. This was something they made up for the movie in order to make it look like the gang had some kind of deep "warrior culture" or something. It just struck me as silly.
