Final battle ruined!

There setting up for another epic fight scene, and then Bam! The cannons go off. Ruined the ending for me.

Another battle would have served blood thirst nothing more. It would have been totally counterproductive to the plot and added another 15 minutes to the movie. The cannons going off interfering with the battle demonstrated the ultimately reality of their world in that they were no longer the big fish they thought they were but rather minnows in a larger pond as demonstrated by the run down headstones and DiCaprio's closing statement:

'And no matter what they did to build this city up again for the rest of time would be like no one ever knew we were here'.

You might as well complain about No Country For Old Men's ending. Scorsese and the Coens shouldn't cater to folks who only want conventional filmmaking.

How was this a spoiler? It is stupid what they are doing as it always is with gangs. Seems we haven't learned that until this day. They break the law, create unrest and all in the name of fueling an ego, that's it. It's organized bullies. All their causes are pathetic and worthless in the light of time as he states at the end.

The cannons simply showed their *beep* would not be tolerated. That *beep* is mostly on Butcher's hands. To be in that time frame as a white person in North America and be ranting on about "natives" and true Americans......
