Does this movie have anything to do with the history of New York City?

I thought I was learning something from this movie

Fascinating times in NYC. We'll worth reading a decent history book about and avoiding internet crappola. Corruption, immigration, war, racism, urban growth and industry all growing and colliding at once.

A lot of people on this board have questioned this film's historical accuracy. I always assumed it was a period piece, which really only needs to be visually and culturally accurate. So was it? Heck if I know. What it was - a fantastic film. Historical portrayals never satisfy everyone. IMHO if the mindsets of people in the 1860's were accurately portrayed it would be so distracting the movie's story would be lost. I also don't believe anyone could really relate. You'd have to normalize racism, misogyny, and all kinds hate and marginalization that doesn't exist today, in America, in terms of what is socially acceptable (minus a few goons of course).
Sorry for that rant. I don't think it is "historically" accurate. I think it probably was a savage place at that time.
It is one fictional guys account of his experience in old New York. Daniel Day Lewis is brilliant and scary, damn good.
