Over the dead rabbit?

I've seen this movie no less than 5 times and it always strikes me as odd that when the dead rabbit is brought to him, he gets so emotional and demands that the officer find out who killed it.

What do you make of this scene?

I have to say that DDL is phenomenal in this movie and steals the show with his performance.
