Why would you sell your necklace before execution?

In the execution scene Bill offers one of the condemned $1 for his necklace and he responds "it was my mother's" then Bill offers him $1.50 and he accepts.

Why? He will be dead in 2 minutes. What's he gonna do with $1.50? Additionally why would Bill pay for it when he can just take it after he has been executed.

It was only some humor. Don't try to rationalize it. Same as when Amsterdam admonished someone who only voted twice then told him to do his civic duty and vote again.

He killed sixteen Czechoslovakians. Guy was an interior decorator.
