Most snubbed film in Oscar history?
10 Noms and not a single win? DDL should have easily won it. Adrien Brody, seriously? What has he done prior to, or since then? FFS.

shareThe Turning Point and The Color Purple were both nominated for 11 and won none. I agree Daniel Day-Lewis should have won for this.
shareGod no.
This is a mediocre film in my mind.
Films like City of God have been more grossly ignored by the Academy.
Overall though the Oscars are not the end all be all of film awards.
Those foolish enough to move from canada to america increase the average I.Q. of both countries
Agreed, just an awful film, rife with hammy overacting and so full of its own self-importance. GoNY is an example of Awards-begging in its lowest form.
shareWe have films others would concider bigger victims of snub, like The Color Purple,True Grit,American Hustle,Shawshank redemption and so on....( A.H didn´t even deserve more then 2 noms in my book).
This film "only"got 75% at RT,has 7.5 here where the people have spoken. Yet,when it comes to taste, our own trancends critical reception, sense, word of mouth etc.
This film is both Epic in scope and yet so improvised and homemade and at times odd in the most wonderful way,Shores score,Ballhaus´s manic cinematography and Schoonmakers editing are the wholy Trinity that helps make this the flawed masterpiece that it is.
I have yet to date found one performance that impress me,scare me,make me laugh and just hypnotize me like DDL´s here. He should naturally have been up for SUPPORTING Oscar and won that one but due to his starpower, his 5 year absence from film and the fact that he blows everyone else away, made everyone Place him in the wrong category....
John C.Reilly is so miscast,it ruins a few important scenes...he makes you laugh for the wrong reason, unlike now when he has found his Calling.
I Think it deserved 7 or so Oscars and that Gleeson should´ve gotten a nom for his supporting turn as Monk,Shore for his unique, dark music. However realistically, without being too greedy,it deserved five.
-Director
-Leading Actor.
-Song.
-Editing.
-Production design.
Oui. Most snubbed ever on the whole. Alot of hard work was robbed of recognition so that a gifted pedophile could be forgiven cause his film was so"important" and heartwarming. Except he wasn´t really forgiven, not being allowed to accept the director statue pretty much writes that in stone. I knew about polacks and their tragic fates in WW2.
I did not know a thing about Life and politics in The five points in the 1860´s since it seems like a forgotten chapter in American history. That Chicago won....sends shivers down ones spine.

No,he is marketed as a lead due to his Amazing performance that owns the film, his cult status, the awe critics and the Academy has for him and his FIVE year absense from acting,he was retired(Fators play in,Ledger wouldn´t hav won likr 45 out of 47 awars if he had lived, though he´d still have the statue)....I won´t botch on this one. As long as he´s billed in a big film like this, second or first is irrelevant. I´m almost surprised Day-Lewis wasn´t billed first.
Two actors of same gender can with Golden globes Comedy category,BAFTA and many critic associations end up in the leading category....he was sold in the leading ategory and it gets one wondering what would´ve happened if Leo turned in a powerhouseperformance worthy of a nomination.
Look, hate the game, don´t hate the players,I don´t make these unfair rules.
We have films where one actor is less known, has a bigger part but more things evolve around his co-actor. Denzels leading, plotcontrolling in Training day to Hawkes observing support. Hawke is more of a lead on paper...
Cruise seen as the lead in Collateral, though Foxx is more of a protagonist with more screentime but still is an observer of the one steering the plot where it needs to go(He IS one of two leads but did Ray the same year, not allowed two spots).
Last king of Scotland where Whitaker has the smaller part.
Are all six leading? Yes. Is Sean Penn the lead role,Watts the female lead and Del Toro the supporting in 21 Grams? No,it´s a story about Three people, something only BAFTA acknowledged. Like no country, either all Three are supporting or all Three leads.
Did Bacon,Penn and Robbins all have the Three lead roles in Mystic River and did Penn win leading,Robbings supporting? Ledger was in Brokeback 4 minutes more then Gyllenhaal but more importantly,a bit more famous and that gave him a leading nom.¨
The story is told from Amsterdams Point of view and as all above they should all be concidered leads...but if we play by the rules,in this coming-of-age-revenge flick,Day-Lewis has the minor lead of the two which should put him in supporting. I guess mostly cause I Think this Is the role he deserved an Oscar for bigtime. As long as someone is billed,,that´s irrelevant.
Everything from a bad agent, big ego, alphabetical order etc are reasons why sometimes someone is billed 1st on a poster. Christian Bale had one of two leads in The fighter, the smaller one but still....why didn´t he get the Butcher--syndrome? Cause everybody really wanted him to win, that´s why.
Did it make sense that in another Three-split-story,Michael Douglas got several nominations as Leading actor vs co-star Del toros supporting? Only the trailer makes this case, the film make both actors two of the four leads.
I wish we could change the rules but until that day,I see on paper,no differene screentime and storyaffecting wise between DDDL in GONY or Phoenix in Gladiator. Things get a Little blurry. Then I would choose to see Phoenix, who has alot of screentime and who´s story is intertwined with Crowess as a leading performance as well.
Bale,Eckhart and Ledger are euals in TDK,imo.
Djimon Hounsous Solomon is a lead in Blood Diamond.
Casey Affleck would be up for leading in Jesse James.
But....they are not. Because their co-stars are, above exactly Everything else, more famous and bigger then them.
We are more or less saying DiCaprio couldn´t get nommed For Gangs and that is true and pretty messed up. I hope they change this, along with an actor not being allowed Two spots in the same categoy. Forementioneds turns in The departed and BD.both nommed at the Globes come to mind.
I see The butcher as a lead in a way but at the same time realize I then support him getting a nomination that would´ve been denied so many others....and the butcher is one of my 5 favourite performances,so me not be hating. Hell,I might be wrong, sorry in that case for wasting your time
If Michael Madsen had played the butcher,he´d end up in supporting....

John C.Riley,Good God....he got Oscarnominated and became a star once he realized how goofy he is(He ruins lot of scenes in Gangs, both from how he looks to talks and acts. That was a role for...Tom Sizemore?)And the Winner was so unworthy IMO. Ed harris had two scenes and played an AIDS-patient in a way Hanks can Dream of,Newman was brilliant,so was Walken....but now I sort of see.
He was sold as leading largely due to comparisment to the supporting category, where all REALLY were supporting,Newman had the biggest part...DDL would have walked home with a welldeserved statue though. I was not a huge Lincoln fan, would´ve balanced it out.
The perception that a film only can have two leads, one male and one female is a silly one, isn´t it? Counter-gender.... And that is sort of this rule that we mentioned.
Yeah, you´re right,I was looking at Abraham´s career the other day and thought he should´ve done better, supporting Oscar and all...and then I see he won Leading. So with T & L released nommed in 1992,I have to find out when they changed this rule...or rules, like not being alllowed to have two spots.
Is DiCaprio a lead or when you sum up The departed as a whole,is he the biggest supporting player in an ensemblefilm? We have alot of scenes without him, without Damon, with just Nicholson....this came to mind cause just so they could honor him at the SAG,his work in Blood Diamond put him in leading and the other supporting.
Have not seen Ordinary people....I know, embarrassing. I´ll get around to it. Seems he was treated as less cause it was his breakthrough.

Shawshank more so because shawshank should of won every award
shareWhat has he done prior to, or since then?He kicked alien arse in Predators. No seriously good performance from DDL, about which the film was constructed.🐭 share
I don't know. I still find it fascinating movie.
