9.3 rating is way too high for this game, 7-8 would be more accuarate. Games like Total Anhilation and Battlezone actually improved the rts genre, this game was just copied ideas from Warcraft, Red Alert and Age of Empires.
It's slightly overrated, but only slightly. Something about Starcraft just... is excellent, somehow. It has perfect unit balance, good graphics (they still look interesting, even if old by today's standards)... great characterisation with the different units, interesting backstory...
Oh yes, the other thing - Starcraft's setting and history is coherent and focused in a way that Warcraft's isn't. The Warcraft universe is just a mess now with all the *beep* that WoW has had introduced into it (basically rip-offs of all sorts of other games, movies and franchises). Since when did Azeroth have raptors, anyway?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Yeah, too bad the rest of the world isn't agreeing with your opinion. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rest of the world? Where? You are the minority here pal.
Not much ground breaking in StarCraft altough it has good Battle.net system but that alone doesnt make this 9/10 game, only fanboys rate it that high.
Jesus Christ. Just go and check the new cinematic trailer of starcraft2. it already has 2 million views in less than 2 days. that's more than a bloody lady gaga video, for your info.
As for the game, I, along with more than 90% of the people who actually played the game, agree that it is the best of its genre ever to be created.
------------------------------------------------------------ This game isn't overrated, its success in esports proves it. ------------------------------------------------------------
Game sold about 9-10 million copies, but about half of them were sold in South Korea (Wikipedia), so Starcraft wasnt so great success as other Blizzard games like Diablo 2 or WoW.
For example, Red Alert sold about 14 million copies, Age of Empires 2 sold ~ 8-10 million copies and those games were popular all over the world, not just in Korea.
Starcraft was just "Warcraft in space" with some improvements but overall it did not give nothing new to rts genre and graphics were awful already in 1998.
Altough this game is not bad (not so great/groundbreaking either), I dont see anything special in this game and this game is overrated like Halo.
I might be a bit of a fanboy, but even looking at Starcraft from an unbiased viewpoint will show that it is a fantastic game.
Now, after this post please don't start a flaming argument with me. I just want to try to correct you on some things and maybe change your mind. If you don't want to, THAT IS OKAY. Anyway...
1) 11 million copies sold as of 2009 (according to Wiki). You say half of that was due to South Korea. I don't see Koreans getting that excited about any other game. And they are Koreans, dammit. :D
2) Saying it wasn't a success like D2 or WoW is silly. Those games came later, especially WoW, when Blizzard were way more popular and those titles were bigger projects, as well as different genres.
3) A game isn't great or bad based on copies sold. Red Alert and Age of Empires are great games, for sure. But any RTS fan knows that Starcraft brought just as much, if not more, to the genre's table. I don't see Red Alert or AoE turning into national sports.
4) Graphics were awful? Are you serious? I look at it today and am still amazed at what they did in two months. Did I say two months? Yes, I did. Starcraft was previewed at a games convention and people labelled it 'orcs in space'. It was criticized for having really bad graphics (based on the Warcraft 2 engine). Blizzard took notice, decided to redesign the look and did so in two months. And that is what Starcraft 2 looks like today.
5) In comparison to Red Alert and AoE, Starcraft had a much better story, plotline and presentation. Also, Starcraft had way better graphics than Red Alert. But this might just be nitpicking your examples.
6) Every gamer I have ever spoken to enjoyed Starcraft. I have yet to meet someone who dislikes it. I honestly do think that you might be trolling or saying it's overrated to go against the stream. That's your choice. But Starcraft is the most balanced and probably the most-played RTS of all time. That should speak for itself.
7) The release of Starcraft 2 was awaited by gamers worldwide. It was one of the most anticipated RTS games EVER. That doesn't seem like overrated to me. That looks like genuine quality.
Anyway, feel free to think what you think. Those are my reasons.
