Could you make a plane like the one in the film?

Could you make a plane like the one in this movie or is the idea not workable at all?

Military drone?

reply

No I mean the part where it changes from helicopter to aeroplane in the middle of flight..

It's like they ripped off the aircraft Mayhem has in M.A.S.K. as that did exactly the same thing.

Possible maybe but worth the investment? Probably not.

True and it may well crash in a burning heap during transformation.

This and jet powered variants are/will be more practical than a rotor that somehow stops and transforms to a fixed wing:

Funnily enough they have tried a rotor that stops mid flight. I actually had no idea this has been tried till I looked.

There was this by Boeing

And this by Sirkorsky

Both very interesting, never heard of either.

The Boeing bears the most resemblance to Arnie's aircraft, and I love how the rotor is driven by jets in the blades themselves to negate the need for anything to counter the rotor torque. Even though it didn't fly until 3 years after the movie was released, I wonder if they got inspiration from the design. You'd think it would have been a secret, but who knows?

The Sikorsky has an interesting way of converting it's more conventional looking blades to a wing too.

lol they both seem very complex and expensive though, I guess that's why neither of them are a thing now.

Thanks for the links!
