patty was ok. but all we know about her really is that she was dumb enough to date a rapist and HELLO....he was forcing himself on her and she did not call the cops!
we also learn that she loves sex but feels guilty about it.
i have dated a girl like her. no substance. oh wait, she is a cartoonist too, so she must be DEEP!
I did not like the character AT ALL!
if it had been dora, that would have been cool. guy learns to love the "ugly" girl. ( looking like you just cried and have not slept in a week does not make you ugly!)
if it had been arlene, that would have been cool. girl who stereotypes men and fears intimacy with one overcomes it.
if it had been wendy that would have been cool. girl feels she is too "2nd best" overcomes her fears.
if it had been cynthia that would have been cool. girl is too hot too talk to falls for geeky smart guy.
but PATTY?
low self esteem artsy sex pot ?
if they had played up her artistic side made her more than a good lay.
he had moments of connection with all these girls and she was the WORST!
You have a point. I was kinda disappointed too. He had developed interesting and close relationships with the rest of the female characters in the movie but there was nothing spectacular going on with Patty. So I felt like the revelation in the end was not really connected with the rest of the story. There was nothing there in their specific interactions to anticipate Patty being The One in the elevator. I was under the impression that he sort of pittied her before finding out who she was to him. I would have preffered Arlene to be the "winner" and I was actually expecting her to be Matt's "kismetic destiny". It would have been nice to see this cool, fearless and feminist girl loosen up, show a softer side and gain confidence in men in the process. Real character and relationship development. Unfortunately... But I still loved Patty's "Sweet leaping Jesus". lol. I think they chose her character to be Matt's soulmate precisely because she lacks self-esteem to such degree that she dates a guy who abuses her. Thus, Matt becomes the rescuer in all ways. And she, in return, being so needy, can teach him what it means to love and to give. And give, and give, till there's nothing left to give anymore. To love is to save. Boy, what a cliche.
the idea was that he found his "true love" and he just knew that in 1 moment in the elevator. since then nothing matters. he wasnt looking for someone to develop a relationship with, he wanted the one he loved in that moment.
i also believe that they didn't paint out a very strong connection between him and patty since the identity of the girl in the elevator was supposed to be a surprise to both the main character and the viewer. they wanted you to think "oh i bet its going to be wendy" or "aw its gotta be dora" before saying "holy *beep* its patty! SHOCKER! zlozlolz!"
The thing is.. Patty never really connected with a guy without the "sex" element of the relationship.. hell.. I won't say its obvious.. it wasn't.. BUT, as she said, she did try and get him to like her for HER.. she was just not quite as confident.. which I thought was an interesing choice. to see the insecure knockout.. Arlene? definitely didn't have a confidence problem.. although I admit, Wendy did have that insecurity as well.. I felt for Patty.. because she tried to get him to like her the only way she KNEW.. and it didn't work.. he was still looking for someone else, ironically it was her.
Did you listen to the voiceover description that Matt provided about the girl? Something about the breast size and champaigne glasses? :)) Call me crazy, and I know it is just a movie slash fiction, but a guy should at least make some pre-selection. He knew how tall the girl was, he knew her breast size (if it was Katherine Heigl's character, he would have been DEAD SURE it is her) and he heard her voice etc. etc. Put me in a dark elevator with a naked girl, let me sleep with her and the next morning I will pick the right one... :))
