So what that a basketball player is gay why is it news

Because it's good for young gay people to see positive role models that they can identify with, especially when there is still risk of young gay people killing themselves because they're living in a sh!tty area or in a sh!tty family that will give them grief. Naturally, if you're not gay, it'll have no affect on you, but that's because it's not intended for you. I imagine we all had someone to look up to when we were young, even if we don't remember. Eventually, we all outgrow the need for role models, but I don't see any reason for young people to not have a little bit of indirect guidance in their lives, especially when I'll never know what it's like to be a young gay person living in the Bible Belt or something.

I agree that it's not "news", but what the hell is these days? If you want news, you're more than capable of going online and searching for it so you don't have to be distracted by stuff that isn't.

Remember... if you ever feel inundated with all the talk of people who are a different sexual orientation than you, well congratulations, you now know what it was like to be a gay person in decades past, the primary difference being that their struggle was real and compounded by actual discrimination, and yours is just a matter of turning your attention to something else in the news.
