We know Goten wasn't born in Future Trunks's timeline and Goten was born after Goku died. There weren't even signs in the series of Chichi being pregnant. We also know that in the main timeline, he's Trunks's best friend. However, my question is if Goku hadn't died, or if Toriyama anticipated bringing Goku back, would Goten have even been in the series? I read before that Goten was brought in the series to replace Goku, as Toriyama wanted to retire Goku and have Gohan take over, but fans forced him to bring him back. I later heard that it wasn't his fans that forced Toriyama to make that decision, but Toriyama in his own writing. But, my question is do you think we would have known Goten if Goku hadn't died? I heard he doesn't fight in this new movie, and he seems less useful than Gohan was at the same age, despite being more powerful. Trunks also seems less useful than Future Trunks. These two kids seem more for comic relief, and Goten resembles Goku which is even stated in the series.

Goten was probably intended to be the new Gohan while Gohan would have become the new Goku.

Except, Goten resembles Goku more especially as a kid, so a kid Goku. He even is compared to Goku by characters.

I mean in terms of role. Goten would still look like Goku.

It's like Dick Grayson Batman and Damien Wayne Robin.

Why would there be any signs? It was stated in the show that she got pregnant before the battle with Cell. It would take weeks before she would even suspect she was pregnant. By that time Goku was dead and we were following him in the other world.

These two kids seem more for comic relief, and Goten resembles Goku which is even stated in the series.

Of course they are and I don't think we have seen them be anything else even in the Buu sagas. Their fights never seemed to be serious to me.

He looks just like Goku and even has that innocence that Goku had in Dragonball.

But, my question is do you think we would have known Goten if Goku hadn't died?

I don't see why we wouldn't. By the end of the series everyone was having kids so even if Goku hadn't died I think Goku and Chichi would have had another kid.

Do you know which episode this was? I didn't religiously watch past Cell Saga, so I'm not super familiar with the storylines past that point.

The kids would still be in the series even if Goku didn't come back; it is clear Toriyama wanted to have a "next generation of Z-Fighters.

The Japanese subtitles call Goten the son Goku left behind before his battle with Cell, but this is not mentioned until the first Episode Goten appears in; not mention of Chi-Chi being pregnant appears in the Cell Saga and she would not have known until much later.

I've always wondered about what if Goten was alive in Future Trunks's timeline? How would he have dealt with the Androids? In the main timeline, he and Trunks were able to hold their own against Android 18 at the tournament.
