How could this movie not answer the lingering question?

Whatever happened to Dr. Chilton????

The last we saw was Hannibal stalking him, yet it's not mentioned of his fate in any of the following movies or the books to my knowledge.

Hell of a loose end.

Not really a loose end. At the end of SOTL Hannibal said to Clarice on the phone that he was having an old friend over for dinner.

No cash here!! Here, no cash!!! Cash, no!!!! Robbo? No Cash!

You think they would mention his disappearance or something.

I realize this doesn't help if we're just talking about the movie but, seeing as this post is recent and, coincidentally, I just started reading the Hannibal novel for the first time, I thought it interesting to mention:

I'm up to Chapter 10 (very early in the book) and it was just mentioned that Chilton 'disappeared'.

The exchange from Clarice to one of the former employees at the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane:

Starling: "You know Fred disappeared."

Corey: "I heard that."

Wait a minute... who am I here?

reply

Oh well, at least it was settled in the book. Thanks for that.

If you're being followed by Hannibal Lecter and go missing, I think most people are able to read between the lines.....

just to input he said "for dinner" not "over for dinner"

and its clear that he died. Hannibal stalked him, killed him, and ate his face. Maybe even ate his face while he was alive. idk didn't read the book. but the phone call he had with clarice explains what happens, no need to show it or bring it up later.
