suggestions for similar cinematography
What I loved about this movie was that every other shot was like a work of art. Absolutely beautiful. Does anyone have any suggestions to other movies with such great cinematography?

shareAgain that was filmed by Christopher Doyle.
In the Mood For Love is beautifully crafted too. Infernal Affairs was great too [although the lamps were overbright and obvious]
Anyone in the know about technicals, know what lighting set ups he used in 2046? 'cause damn, the sets were said to be tiny and he managed to make it a real beaut.

Ah some good scans on the information here. Thanks for the heads up. I love the look of the film, sod wide shots and establishing shots, it was amazingly filmed ;)
I'd suggest Mulholland Dr. Very different feel, but similarly impressionistic and haunting cinematography with amazing lighting and color. That along with the music make sure the images from the film never leave your mind.
Also The Life Aquatic, which is quite whimsical, but always blows me away with the beautiful Italian locales and saturated colors. Wes Anderson has the same eye for specific visual elements that WKW does, though it's a very different kind of lushness.
Also, anything else Christopher Doyle's name is on, except Last Life in the Universe, which has his trademark amazing lighting, but was made with far cheaper equipment, and it shows (the camera work seems very flat and often distracts, and the mostly uninteresting sets and uninspired imagery ruin any potential beauty, other than the ONE shot that they put on the cover). In The Mood For Love is especially amazing. That and 2046 are probably the most ridiculously pretty films ever made.
Yeah, I'd agree. Most anything by Christopher Doyle. But 'In the Mood for Love' is probably most similar to 2046 in look and feel than any other film out there imo.
Maybe I DO wanna be a french fry!
Lots of Asian directors. Tend to use colors really brilliantly, super-saturated colors, but less urban than 2046:
Dreams, Ran
Raise the Red Lantern, Ju Dou, etc.
Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...
David Lynch
Sofia Coppola's cinematographer's somewhat similar, especially in how time is "captured."
And don't forget Fellini. Tho the technology now is so much better, Juliet of the Spirits and his other color films tend to suffer by comparison.
I often wonder how much of the look of 2046 and ITMFL is due to Christopher Doyle since both films were collaborative efforts on cinematography -with I know three cinematographers working on 2046. WKW's films went leaps and bounds ahead after Doyle stopped being the only cinematographer on the movies! Just saying is all.
For other visually stunning movies that also have beautiful soundtracks try Kieslowski's later movies The Three Colours, Blue, White and Red. Red probably has one of the most brilliant storylines of a movie you could see as well. Also beautiful is his Double Life of Veronique - which I didn't care for terribly.
All the Jean-Pierre Jeunet movies, particularly "Amelie".
Most of the Tim Burton movies.
"Pride & Prejudice" has real great cinematography. Style is different from Wong's.
Check the cinematography awards!
Is Christopher Doyle the camera operator also?
"Laugh and the whole world laughs with you, Weep and you weep alone" Oh Dae-su (Oldboy)
The Conformist http://imdb.com/title/tt0065571/ - cinematography by the once great Vittorio Storaro, probably the most visually beautiful film I've ever seen.
All you need to make a movie is a girl and a gun.share
Some of the best i suggest are:
Chucking Express[again Kar Wai Wong]9/10
Daisy 8/10
Eros[Wong's film is the best-complete and meaningfull story]7.5/10
Young Adam[not Asian,but still very good] 8/10
In the Mood for Love[the 2nd of the trilogy] 9/10
Second Skin[again not Asian,it's Spanish] 7/10
Well, these film deal with love, artists, their creations and generally how we all face love, past, emotions etc.
Enjoy!
