Not a sequel

Yeah... I know. Wong himself said that 2046 is not a sequel of In the mood for love but that is considered by the most of fans.
For me 2046 is not a sequel but a sort of "twin" movie of ITMOF. The character of Tony Leung is similar to the one of the previous film... but it's not the same. So, in my opionion 2046 is a dream of the character of ITMOF... or viceversa.

Weirdly enough though, there is a shot in In The Mood for Love where Tony Leung closes his apartment door and the camera holds on his apartment number: 2046. Which is odd because it felt like a blatant wink to the audience like Kubrick's poster of 2001 in Clockwork Orange, however, Wong Kar Wai HADN'T MADE 2046 yet. So it was a reference to a movie that he would make... in the future?

reply

Yeah I think Wong was making a hint to the future, maybe, but it was definitely intended. It wasn't just a random number. I think the deleted scenes in In The Mood for Love didn't include the room # 2046.

I agree this was a twin to In The Mood for Love. The Spanish music, the rain, the lights, the was it was shot, the slow motions. But it's opposite in ways. The blatant sex scenes, the overabundant amount of talk rather than silences. Yet it was still subtle, though in a different way.

Rather--that's why he thought of "2046" for this film. Maybe the number has some significance for him, which would be why he chose it for the room number in In the Mood for Love, too, or he simply got the idea from the number he chose for the room.

It definitely looks like a sequel, but I would rather if it weren't. There are too many similarities. There's even a shot of Maggie Cheung when Tony talks about the missed opportunity. Also the time he spent in Singapore, the trip to Kambodia, the complete matching of the timeframe of both movies (with all the comings and goings).
If he wanted it to look less like a sequel, he should, and could make it different, or at least not mention those details.

the Su Li-zhen and mr.chow...dont dey come from itmfl???? wierd why wudd he say dat its nt a sequel... twisted !!

This is still an independant movie, need not be a sequel.
If you consider it a sequel, it's also a sequel to Days of Being Wild. Carina Lau's role is the same, even refered to Leslie and you can consider Tony's Chow is actually the Tony that appears at the end of Days of Being Wild.

It's more like a SUM-UP of all his past movies.

Wong Kar Wai said 2046 is the end. His future Chinese movies will be of a different concept.

The reason that 2046 is not a sequel is that a sequel is some thing that happens after the first movie. 2046 takes place during a time period that is before the ending of ITMFL. If the two movies where a book then ITMFL would be chapters 1-12 & 26, and 2046 would be chapters 13-24.
Also both movies where filmed at the same time, due to the fact they where knocking down one of the hotels that made up sets for both movies.

Its not a sequel or a prequel, its a parallelquel.
