2046 is the past and the future.

Sometimes people are disappointed in the present, so they wish to spend their future in the past so they take the futuristic train and live in memories of what once was.

2046 is a metaphor. It could be Hong Kong, it could mean unrequited love. One thing is for sure though, its pretty cool. Whatever it is.

2046 is a state of the mind!

it is different for everyone, but at the same time it's the same in essence.

"at 2046, nothing changes, everything stays the same FOREVER!"

it's explained in the film, no-one really knows if this is true, becasue no-one who has ever been there has ever left. if you go there with only happy memories, you probably would want to stay there forever as well. but if you go there with only painful memories, then try not to stay for too long, i know it's hard to leave, but please try, because no-one deserves pain for that long.

to anyone whose reading this, i wish you all joy and happiness, wherever you can find it. even fake happiness is better than pain.

to all the happy people, sorry if i depressed you. i didn't mean to. :)

I think that 2046 means love(a state of mind itself amiright?) and a place in time AT THE SAME TIME, like the movie quotes:
- "if you go there with only happy memories, you probably would want to stay there forever". Simple, if you're in love why would you want it to end?

- this one is a little bit harder to swallow in my words, but if you read the movie quote you'll get it clearly.
"if you go there with only painful memories, then try not to stay for too long, i know it's hard to leave, but please try, because no-one deserves pain for that long". I mean if you're not in love or you're still in love but this love is impossible cause it's not the same as used to be, still, feels better than loneliness itself that you rather cherish it than finding a new one. Do it, cherish it. But please dont do it forever cause you will ruin your chances finding a new one.

This movie is an oeuvre d'art, I'll lovely drop the "You dont get it" gem for you if you think the movie is dull and pointless. I would risk to say that if you never loved someone and lost it due to lifes own complexity, you'll never get it.

Bonus tip: Watch 5 centimeters per second(muahaha)

2046 is a metaphor of his memory of a unfruitful love affair. Generally, it's (his) past memories.
You obviously haven't watched In the mood for love.
Watch it, and you'll understand it a little more.

That is cool that your mind was so tranced that you saw that, but I doubt that was intentional. Perhaps, but a little silly to be playing tricks with numbers that way in such a quality movie.

I believe there is a scene in the movie where a character does read 2046 out loud in english, and it sounds like to owe for sex.

Strange things are afoot at the Circle-K.
