This makes 'In The Mood For Love' look like a student film.

I loved ITMFL, and would give it 8/10, but 2046 makes it look like a 3. At first I didn't really like 2046 and thought it was a inferior film to ITMFL, but after the third viewing, everything just clicked and I was wowed, prompting me to watch it a fourth time. The film is like an onion, the more you watch it, the more layers you peel back, the more flavor there is and the more you appreciate it.

The moment everything came together for me was when I tried to get inside Chow's mind, and you get to see why he behaves a certain way, his thought process, how he makes his decisions and the way they're dictated by his past experiences. ITMFL used to be one of my favorite films and it still is in a way, but 2046 trumps it.

I completely agree ring911. I originally rated ITMFL either a 10/10, or a 9/10, but since watching 2046, it has dropped to a 7/10.

This movie is really in a class of its own for me. One of my two favorite films for sure.

Both great movies in their own ways. Personally I slightly prefer ITMFL

Don't agree. 2046 is very good. In the Mood for Love is superior.

Of all the WKW films I've seen I enjoyed ITMFL the least. It was boring and I didn't feel any chemistry between the characters.

Maybe I need to be married and cheated on to appreciate the story but as it stands, it didn't do much for me. I gave it a 6/10. I have thoroughly enjoyed his previous films though.

Interestingly, I had the contrary impression. 2046 is so excessive in its use of aesthetic stuff (music, lighting, colouring, abuse of slow motion) that at times it simply doesn't fit with the discourse and the situations of the characters. Even if none of them could be labeled as amateurish, 2046 definitely feels more like it than In the mood for love, as if Kar-Wai was wildly experimenting with the forms instead of having a clear idea on how to mix them with the story.

I still think that ITMFL is a better film overall, but how can you not love everything WKW does? He's probably my favorite filmmaker working today, anywhere.

Am I the only one here who likes Days of Being Wild the most? Don't get me wrong ITMFL is an aesthetic masterpiece with an amazing and memorable soundtrack, but I just felt that DOBW had a poignancy that none of the other films seemed to capture. I just feel almost eternally sorry for the characters in the film not only because they are portrayed incredibly realistically, but also because I know they represent so many countless people out there who go through the same heartbreaking situations. The somewhat melancholy sombre tone and dingy poorly lit apartments give this film such an unforgettable atmosphere, coupled with the last few scenes it leaves an almost haunting sense of sadness that lingers long after the films over. Not to mention the characters are all dynamite particularly the chemistry between Carina Lau and Jacky Cheung.

"Days of Being Wild" is his second weakest ("My Strawberry Nights" being the weakest). I always feel dirty after watching it.

It also goes nowhere, like Leslie Cheung's character (and him in real life).

Idk, the whole faux-sci-fi angle came across as a bit overreaching, forcing complexities on the thing that don't feel entirely natural and ultimately served to make the thing more obtuse - especially as it's not very well developed. And the rest is a repetitive, somewhat unfocused and not very engaging mish-mash of Leung's various relationships. The cinematography, the look of the film is outstanding as per usual for a Karwai production, and his command of tone rarely falters, but also typically, things are looking a tad light substance wise.
