Bai Ling

Couldnt they get Bai Ling the play the character of Bai Ling...?

reply

It seemed strange they couldn't come up w/ a different name. Was this some kind of inside joke maybe?

Zhang Ziyi's Bai Ling(name) is totally different from real Bai Ling(name).
"Bai" is the popular Chinese family name.
As for "Ling", they have the same pronunciation but different Chinese characters.
Zhang Ziyi's "Ling" means the sound of jade(sounds like plink). Another "Ling" means dancing witch originally.

cut them some slack man, cause they're not scholars on china, and don't know everything about mandarin doesn't mean they are totally ignorant, perhaps the original poster was just curious, i doubt his intention was to insult

I deleted some words in original post.

Still ... some have suggested a real connection between Zhang's character name and Bai Ling, the actress. To me, Bai Ling is becoming her own version of Paris Hilton. Who the heck invited her to all those parties? Did she just ... show up?? She's done some good movies, but her 'exposure' is just not warranted. And speaking of exposure, where does she shop for clothes? "Tarts Are Us"??

On the other hand ... Zhang Ziyi seems to be doing it ALL right. After seeing her in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon I knew she was going to be a star!

I know that the meaning of the character's name is different from the actor Bai Ling's name. Still, I can't help but think WKW was consciously or subconsciously trying to say something by naming the prostitute in his story 'Bai Ling'.

Personally, I think Bai Ling has talent. But it's overshadowed by her often bizarre and extremely trampy behavior and appearance. And NO, she can't sing!

Maybe I DO wanna be a french fry!

I thought Bai Ling was remarkable in Anna and the King (1999). Both Jodie Foster and Chow Yun Fat played restrained characters and Ling's character, so emotional and passionate, came across like electric shock! I thought she was well cast.

It's too bad her scenes in E-III were cut. George Lucas obviously thought she had enough talent to cast and film her in the first place. Just too bad she posed for Playboy BEFORE the film's release. She would've got more exposure from the film than from Playboy had she waited. Lucas says it's not why she was cut. But as with Spielberg dealing with TomKat during the release of 'War of the Worlds', I'm sure Lucas didn't want controversy distracting from his film. I would've cut her too. She should've waited.

Good actor. Bad PR/career advice, if any...

Bad career advice:

Shu Qi's manager pulled her from "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" to instead make a commercial.

Yes: he was fired.

Why?
