Lois really was a horrible mother many times.
Humiliating Malcolm in front of the whole school by freaking out over a single stain on his pants, messing up his first year at college...
Lois Battles Jamie is an episode all point out to defend Lois's tacticts. She burned Francis's teddy bear in front of him so he would learn not to play with lighter fluid. What was the lighter fluid doing there on the floor anyway, being such an easy access to him? Not to mention that she had a terrible attitude towards Francis's wife despite disliking the way Hal's family had been treating her. She admitted to holding a grudge against him, which presumably spurred on the unhealthy relationship they had later. So, in order for her to be happy, her child had to be miserable? That is just incredibly selfish and just wrong,
Hal is mostly passive most of the time but actually isn't much better than Lois. Episode Morp shows that well. Dude, you kicked out your thirteen year old son out of the house, at night, alone, with a free access to your money and credit cards, so you could have sex with your wife. What if some creep offered him a ride or he ran into some junkie wanting a fix etc.? From what I remember, they didn't exactly live in an upscale-or safe-neighborhood.
Yes, she stood up for Reese when those girls humiliated him etc. but that is like a free ice cream in Hell if you get the comparisson.
