What is wrong about this movie?

I know that it isn't exactly a masterpiece of a comedy, but I liked it. But I've read so many bad reviews about it and I've seen worse comedies that have gotten much better reviews and ratings, so tell me, what is exactly wrong about this movie?

Frankly, Sandra Bullock just isn't hot enough - she looks like somebody's mother and is only middling attractive.

Just because she isn't some sknny ass bimbo doesnt mean she isnt hot? Sandra Bullock is beautiful and it only just added to her beauty in this role... That was the point of the movie. Not to find a hot girl for the pageant, just a girl who had the right persona, in Gracie's case, being an FBI agent...
This film was so right on so many levels.

Bishop O'Hara: You took a vow of hospitality for all in need.
Rev. Mother: I lied.

Well, an entire movie doesn't allways depend on its actor/actress, right?

You don't think Sandra Bullock is hot? What's wrong with you, man?

Personally I think this movie is hilarious. There's nothing wrong with it, and it really couldn't have been any better in my book. The cast is all perfect for their roles with Bullock, Michael Caine, Candice Bergen, William Shatner, and Heather Burns delivering laugh after laugh.

LAST MOVIE SEEN: About Schmidt
RATING: 7/10 stars

Some people tend to get a bit nitpicky when it comes to comedies. Honestly, I thought this was a good film. It was funny when it tried to be, and the emotional scenes were effective enough. Its one of those movies that you can just have fun watching. In some movies, they don't even pay much attention to tiny little details that viewers only see for a few seconds on screen. But that "citizen letter" was actually put-together with thought. I know this because I "examined" the citizen letter. How they came up with the Miss United States pageant after analyzing the letter actually made sense. Sandra Bullock was amazing in this. She did look very manly pre-pageant, but when they dolled her up to go undercover, she looked fantastic.

There is nothing wrong with this movie - it's one of my favourties! Sandra Bullock is very hot in this film and is such an enjoyable person to watch. The plot is pretty basic, but this is a fun film. It's enjoyable to watch and sometimes that is all you want. I could watch this film every day and not get bored (for a time, I almost did!) - I love it. 10 stars from me!

Nothing is wrong with this movie. It's one of my all time favorite comedies.

I didn't care much for it. I thought the plot was ridiculous. I know it's a comedy, but it wasn't funny at all. I usually like Benjamin Bratt, but he was just plain awful in this. Sandra Bullock is always good, and Candice Bergen and William Shatner are too. They were fine, but the story itself was a mess.

Hard to believe they actually made a sequel to it.

You personally didn't find it funny and most people did, that's not a weakness of the film.

Could you describe how the story was a mess? You say the plot was ridiculous but I think the filmmakers and fans of the film would certainly acknowledge that and that is the charm of movies like this, they're fun movies that aren't meant to be totally grounded in reality. People like you take yourself way too seriously and that's why this movie has a poor rating because of pretentious douche bags that can't sit back and have a laugh without over analysing things and taking themselves too seriously. They miss out on a fun movie in the end so they lose.

I think the thing is we sort of know where the story is going. We know that the initial suspect isn't going to be guilty and there is more than meets the eye in the mystery. Also, we know that Bullock's character will change from being tomboyish to beautiful and that Bratt's character will fall in love with her. One other thing is we know that the contestant who befriends her will win, since they are not going to give the damn title to some extra.

I didn't read this thread, but I want to comment on one remark -- that Sandra Bullock "isn't hot enough." I am no fan of hers, but I thought she was excellent for the part -- she looked real dowdy one minute, and then really great and curvaceous in that tight dress with the long slit for her leg.

There really isn't anything wrong with this movie. It is one of my favorites, and whenever I come across it on tv, I always watch. It does a wonderful job of both skewering and respecting beauty pageants. I love the character of Gracie. She's smart and tough, and if need be, pretty damn good looking. Plus, who can ever think of the word "sing" in the same way again after seeing this film.

Gracie: "And always remember to SING: solar plexus, instep, nose, groin."

reply

Haha, yeah, I agree on the latter thing you mentioned. A creative thing of the screenwriters.

One of the best parts of the movie was Sandra Bullock! I'm amazed that the poster said she wasn't "hot enough." Are you kidding? She is beautiful and her character made the movie hilarious, heart-warming and gave it that boost to make it unlike a normal comedy. She definitely had her part in making it a movie that has stood the test of time!!
