Why isn't this film usually considered a dark comedy?

I mean, the humor in this gem definitely leaned toward the macabre (just like every humor in any movie Jeunet ever directed), but I rarely see the film called a dark comedy. Usually it's called a romantic comedy (which it is), but never a dark comedy. Why is that?

It's not like there isn't a dark romantic comedy before (e.g: Trust).

Now that I think of it, you have a point there.

i find dark comedies to be satirical in some sense and i didn't find that in Amelie

You mean like a satire?

I don't find many black comedies to be satirical, but you got a point.

I actually felt like it lead towards dark humor at times too. The dark funny moments i could really think of at the moment is, when the parents misinterpreted the fish swimming out the bowl as it having suicide tendencies. Or the mom dying all of a sudden during her childhood.

Maybe When Joseph weirdly stalks his ex and current girlfriend, and just basically everyone and keeps account of time. Mostly ill just call it quirky humor. Like how Amelie herself stalks her love interest, and how shes interested in people Orgasming. I love it

Showing off is the fools idea of glory

I believe, at heart, every movie directed Jean-Pierre Jeunet (with the exception of Alien 4) is dark humor.

what's dark in Amelie? I haven't seen the movie in a year or two, so all I remember is the pure joy I feel watching it. I mean, all she does is help everyone find their happy ending until she finds her own.

There are lots of moments that I think of as dark: her "heart condition", the goldfish, the mother's death, the phone call to the video shop, making a man think he's gone insane and enjoying it... Can't think of them all off the top of my head, but there are so many. The humour is extremely dark in parts, but all it does is make the rest more uplifting.
