It was a joke. They gave him that nickname because of the long hair and they equated him with someone who might be gay so that's why, as a joke, he kissed Berrtier. It was a hilarious moment and actually helped bond the team together.

I don't see what is funny about kissing someone.

I think the scene was put in for one reason: shock value, and that it actually makes absolutely no sense in terms of the plot.

It should be against the law to use 'LOL'; unless you really did LOL!

Because Bertier was hot, and he fancied him.

No seriously, Bertier's first reaction to Sunshine was to call him a fruitcake, so that was how Sunshine got back at him.

When they first met at the practice Bertier referred to him as a fruitcake! Something I didn't know up until a few years ago "FRUITCAKE" is another term for gay?

I just saw it Sunshine's was of making Bertier his bitch. Notice after that, Sunshine doesn't show any interest in him or any of the other guys on the team. I think it was his way of emasculating Gerry and knocking him down a notch.

Haha yeah. It's funny cuz bertier get owned when he goes at him too. sunshine was the best at making people swing and miss. Idk if he couldn't actively beat up gerry even. He don't seem that type But he sure knew how to not lose lol

To knock him off balance and show he wasn't going to take any crap off of him.

Sunshine comes in, California surfer boy, long flowing golden hair, and macho badass crew-cut linebacker Bertier would be likely to start picking on him and giving him crap. Sunshine decided to beat him to it and throw him back on his heels from the get-go.

He was trying to piss off Bertier into coming at him only to be sacked. As someone else mentioned, this was Sunshine's way of further establishing that he wasn't going to take crap from Bertier or anyone else.

It established that the suspicion was correct. Sunshine was just after Bertier's junk. (Bullheaded move, though.) And I thought it unrealistic for the time setting and surprisingly awkward moment for a Disney movie.
