for anyone who played both the snes and PS versions

which one should i buy? is there any difference between the snes version and the one that was included in final fantasy chronicles?

reply

it's been so long since i've played the SNES version, but i'm pretty sure the PSX version is the same (with added anime sequences)

reply

And don't forget the added load times.

Yeah, I've played both, and GOD! those load times on PSX suck bad, but it might just be cuz I'm so used to playing the SNES one

reply

Gimme a break, those load times suck but Chrono Trigger is that good of a game that anyway you can find it, buy it. But that's me a Chrono Trigger purist will spend his life savings on any game of Chrono Trigger.

reply

Yeah, def worth putting up with the load times. For some reason I never owned a SNES as a child, I had an NES, but it wasn't until playstation come out that I had a job and enough money to buy my own system.

I spend 12 years on it.

PSX version not only has horrid loading times, but also gimped music and sound effects as well (a bad thing that pretty much happens with almost every SNES port). I suggest getting the SNES version. It's well-worth your money.

I have played both versions, and I actually really enjoyed the PS version! The controls were pretty much the same as on the SNES -- nothing difficult. The think I loved about the PS version is that there was a place on the disc where you could listen to the music that you have accessed already in the game. For example, as you progress in the game, you are able to listen to more of the music tracks. I don't know, for me the music was a big thing I loved about this game -- I even bought the soundtrack for cryin out loud! I don't know if this was available on the SNES version, but it was great on the PS version.

I have no idea if this against the forum rules (I think only asking for and/or advertising emulators is bad), but if you really can't get your hands on an SNES (or don't want to try), I HIGHLY suggest looking into a SNES emulator for your computer.

It/They are free, and there is one really good one in particular that can be found with a simple google.

horrid load time and gimped music, and added anime vs better sound no load time and no fancy anime. oh yea, and the ps version also added elements that connect to to chrono cross.

I think that's enough info to make a choice.

The SNES version had some better dialogs.

Especially Frog and his cool Olde English accent.

Dunno if they changed it for PSX version, though. But if they did, get the SNES version.

The "accent" was never in the JPN version, and it was weird that no one else of that era had one...but even so, I miss it. ^_^

Get the DS version if you have a DS. It has all the best points of those two versions, plus new stuff and a better translation.

you could get the DS version if you have a DS, its 20 bucks and is identical to the PSX version (with added anime cutscenes) minus the HORRENDOUS load times. Thats the version I have and its great.
