How does he even remember that he has the condition?

Often times, he excuses himself towards other people by saying "I apologize, you see, I have this condition..." when he doesn't know what the other person is saying.

But if he can't form new memories, how does he remember that he has the condition itself, since him having a condition is something that appeared after the trauma?

He should not only keep forgetting his recent memories, but also keep forgetting that he keeps forgetting them. He might feel that something is wrong because he can't remember recent events, but that would always be the first time for him that he would feel in such a way. The fact that he's aware that his memory loss already happened quite a few times and that this is caused by his "condition" seems to show that he somehow does form new memories, namely the very memory of acquiring the condition.

This is a great question!
I always figured that he had to leave a note for himself, after he had been told numerous times of his condition. Like, one day, he comes to in whatever institution he’s in, and this day the doctor is particularly adamant in explaining his condition because it’s the umpteenth time the doctor has had to explain the condition, and Leonard writes a note on his skin with a pen to remember. And everything snowballs from there.

The "remember Sammy Jankis" tattoo.

He shouldn't be able to remember to condition himself to remember, due to the condition he has.

There was this real-life memory problem guy, that lives every 15 minutes (or whatever the time was) as if he has just woken up from coma and hasn't seen his wife for years or something.

There's NO way the real-life guy could ever have been organized and competent enough to do 10% of the stuff this guy in this movie does.

That's the difference between reality and movies..
