when the father was worried about Andrea's unusual missing competitiveness/eagerness to live i predicted that Andrea was going to commit suicide, as this attitude is often indicitive of depression. it was strange that they brought this fact about Andrea to the audience's attention but it was never really resolved or implied that Andrea did commit suicide...also the whole thing with the falliability of the scuba gear- i couldve sworn that they were going to find out that there was nothing wrong with the gear but that Andrea was purposely using it improperly or soemthing of that sort/ did anyone else find it kind of strange that there was no real conclusions regarding these points that were obviously put out there?

Good point. But maybe they were afraid of what they might discover if they carried on the investigation about his death. Imagine how painfull it would be to discover that he commited suicide.

I personally don´t beleive he did it. He semmed to be happy with his family, and also had a girlfriend who loved him. Maybe it is just normal for a person of his age to be depressed or uninterested about life.

He did not commit suicide. He was a generally happy well-adjusted boy. There was also the comment that he scratched his nails off in the scuba accident, which indicates that he was trying to claw his way out of the cave in a desperate attempt to save his life as the air was running low in his tank. Such a horrifying and tragic image. If he had wanted to commit suicide, he would have done it in a far more surefire way.

My take on the lack of competitiveness is the father's overzealous parenting given his background as a psychoanlayst. Perhaps he was seeing a problem where there really wasn't any. I think that Andrea was simply a kind good hearted kid who just simply wasn't agressive by nature or highly competitive.

Those are 2 different things. In fact, one might argue that not being competitive is a sign of someone who lives life. Maybe to the point of being a hippie. If he had thought of himself as a loser who couldn't win (instead of someone who didn't care about winning), then he would've shown signs of being suicidal.
