i do believe this version is more watered down than the original
I,ve just this second watched the remake again, after seeing the original, only for the first time just 2 weeks ago.
Now alot of people say, the remake is a watered down version of the original. And to be honest, to a degree they are right. In general i would definently dub the remake a watered down version of the original. You,ve only got to look at their certificate ratings. The original was an 18, the remake was only a 15.
Although i think Stallone is better at playing hard men than micheal caine, and i think Stallone actually played a more focused Carter (he didnt have 2 one night stands with 2 different women, and he didnt joke about so much with those he knew like Caine did as carter), Caines Carter i would have to say was a less appealing Carter. He was more colder, and he isolated himself almost compleatly from his deceased brothers daughter and widow. In the remake, he has quite the father figure relationship with his brothers daughter.
Carter kills more people in the original aswell.
But i think what makes the crunch more than anything else when people say the Stallone remake was well watered down, was the ending. In the ending of the remake, Stallones Carter is seemingly becoming repentent. Whilst Caines one shows not an ounce of reconsideration or repentancy. Also Stallones Carter lets that buisness tycoon guy live, Caines one kills him. As for the man who actually kills Carters brother, Caines one definently kills him, and in quite the gritty graphical scenario aswell. You dont even know whether Stallones one kills him or not.
I,d imagine devout fans of the original, found the ending of the remake very disappointing, even pitifull so to speak?. Only question left on my mind is, what is Micheal Caines character in all of this in the remake?. What was his part in the murder of Carters brother?. I didnt pick up on it?
